Pushover

During the opening bank job, Wheeler shoots the guard and escapes with $250,000. The police, eager to question Wheeler, mount a manhunt and begin surveillance arrangements to capture him alive.

Lona's car won't start after she leaves the theater, and Sheridan appears at her window. He can't fix the car, so he takes her to a bar while a mechanic makes the repair. They end up spending the night together, followed by the next three days in each other's company.

The next morning, Sheridan reveals he is an undercover cop tasked with befriending Lona to locate Wheeler. Surveillance is arranged on Lona's apartment with officers in an opposite building, aiming to bring Wheeler in alive. Eckstrom, along with McAllister and Paddy, participate in the stakeout.

Lona leaves her apartment and Sheridan tailors his moves to follow. She accuses him of manipulating her car, but eventually forgives him and proclaims love. She tries to persuade him to kill Wheeler so they can run away together, and he agrees to meet her on the rooftop.

On a later shift, Sheridan lets McAllister tail Lona while he stays on the stakeout. Paddy leaves his post to visit a bar, giving Wheeler a chance to arrive. Sheridan and Paddy ambush Wheeler, force him to open his car trunk, and Sheridan shoots him dead.

Sheridan and Paddy decide to cover up the murder rather than bring Wheeler in, fearing their boss's anger. They shove Wheeler's body into the trunk and begin disposing of him, while the stakeout crew continues monitoring the area.

Paddy grows suspicious of Sheridan's motives and wants to confess and return the money, risking his pension. Sheridan blocks him during a tense confrontation, and Paddy is shot in the stomach with his own pistol, leaving Sheridan to claim Paddy committed suicide to cover the mistake.

Miss Stewart, the neighbor, asks for ice at Lona's building; she tells McAllister about a man she saw in Lona's apartment, though he misreads it as Wheeler. Sheridan answers the hall door, then abducts Miss Stewart as he pursues Lona and the money, taking both women toward Wheeler's car.

Eckstrom and McAllister realize Sheridan is the man Miss Stewart saw and deduce he has both women with him. They race back to the stakeout and prepare to intervene as the situation heads toward Wheeler's car.

Sheridan and Miss Stewart reach Wheeler's car, and Miss Stewart is sent to retrieve the money from the trunk while Sheridan keeps Lona at bay. McAllister fires from behind the police car, forcing Sheridan and Lona to run as another officer closes in.

A waiting detective fires, mortally wounding Sheridan as he attempts to escape. An ambulance arrives, and Lona kneels by the dying cop, overwhelmed by the tragedy.

Rick McAllister and Miss Stewart walk away together into the night, while Lona contemplates the night’s events and the price of passion and crime. The crime, confession, and close of the operation leave a somber, unresolved mood as dawn approaches.
