In 1933, notorious bank robber John Dillinger is brought to Indiana State Prison under the guise of a prisoner transfer with his partner, John 'Red' Hamilton. This seemingly mundane transfer sets the stage for a series of chaotic events led by Dillinger and his gang.

At Indiana State Prison, Dillinger and his gang orchestrate a daring escape armed with smuggled guns. The escape quickly escalates into chaos as Dillinger reveals his identity, allowing him and his gang to overpower the guards in a violent shootout.

Meanwhile in East Liverpool, Ohio, FBI agent Melvin Purvis and his team track the notorious criminal Pretty Boy Floyd. In an intense chase through an apple orchard, Purvis demonstrates his sharpshooting skills and successfully fatally wounds Floyd.

After their prison escape, Dillinger's gang finds temporary refuge in Chicago. They meet corrupt cop Martin Zarkovich, who promises them protection from the Mafia, allowing them to continue their criminal activities without immediate threat.

In Chicago, Dillinger encounters Anna Sage, a close associate who becomes pivotal in supporting his criminal endeavors. Their alliance not only solidifies Dillinger’s operations but also thickens the plot as law enforcement closes in.

As he succumbs to his injuries, Dillinger utters poignant last words. He instructs Purvis to relay a message to Billie Frechette: 'Tell Billie for me, 'Bye bye Blackbird,'' capturing the tragic end of his criminal saga.
