The Postcard Bandit

Brenden James Abbott and Aaron Reynolds break free from Fremantle Prison in Western Australia, and together they embark on a long, high-stakes bank-robbing spree that spans the country. Their plan to avoid identification includes traveling with a Japanese tourist, turning their road trip into a moving target for investigators. During this risky stretch, Abbott drops a blunt truth to Reynolds: he’s planning to cut him loose. Reynolds fires back with a warning, and the tension erupts in a moment that undersells the fragile loyalty between two men on the run:

“You won’t last a week without me,” Reynolds tells Abbott.

Yet the life on the lam proves cruelly short for Reynolds, who is arrested about four weeks after that exchange. Even so, the public believes a tangled, shared criminal history exists between Abbott and his brother, Glenn Abbott, a notion that the film repeatedly disputes as a dangerous myth.

On the Gold Coast, Brenden meets the woman who becomes the mother of his son, William William. The lure of wealth keeps pulling him back into crime, and he resumes bank robberies to feed a extravagant, reckless lifestyle. Brenden’s brother Glenn introduces a driver who will help execute a string of heists, including a daring Perth bank job that goes in through the roof and ends with the driver injuring his ankle in the scramble.

Back on the coast, Abbott learns that his lover is pregnant and then leaves her, continuing the criminal cycle. The woman discovers the truth about the man she thought she knew, and Brenden’s life takes another turn when he begins seeing a prostitute who becomes the getaway driver for several robberies. The partnership with his brother remains fractured, as Glenn proves to be a volatile ally who warns him that he’s never truly free while joined to the crime world. A blunt moment between them captures the tension: Glenn declares, “No good on me own.”

Police pressure tightens as Glenn is seized for possession of illegal weapons and forced to reveal Brenden’s whereabouts, leading to Abbott’s arrest at Surfers Paradise. He is sent to a maximum-security prison in Brisbane, where he befriends a small-time criminal and plots an escape with four other inmates. The plan falters for the others, but Abbott and his partner stay at large, continuing a wave of robberies that culminates in a spectacular heist at the Commonwealth Bank in Pacific Fair, Gold Coast, netting around $800,000.

The manhunt intensifies when Abbott’s partner becomes a focal point after a deadly drug deal, during which two police officers are killed. The pair slip away to Darwin for a time, only to be drawn back into the chase when a chance encounter on the street exposes Abbott’s identity. He is recaptured and returned to Queensland to resume his confinement.

A later sequence carefully debunks a popular police myth: the idea that Abbott sent taunting postcards while on the run. In fact, the police had recovered a roll of film carried by an accomplice, and the images were developed and shared with the media, revealing the truth behind the postcard story and closing a chapter in a long, infamous chase.
