Princess Arete

Arete grows up under the King's rule in a secluded tower, awaiting a suitor worthy of her. The isolation makes her yearn for life beyond the castle walls and stokes a quiet curiosity about the wider world. Her upbringing sets the stage for the awakening she will soon experience.

She sneaks out on several nights to glimpse the life that lies outside the walls. Each excursion reveals small wonders and a sense of freedom she has rarely known. A discovery of a stories-filled book about witches and wizards deepens her longing for magic and adventure.

Two eager suitors arrive to win the King’s favor by completing treasure quests, but Arete feels no interest in them. Her desire to escape grows as the suitors' influence over the court tightens. When her attempt to flee is thwarted, guards seize her and she is brought before the King to answer for her actions.

The King meets with Boax, a powerful sorcerer, to discuss a betrothal that would unite their fates. Boax enchants Arete to appear as a traditional, compliant princess and transports her to his distant castle. The enchantment marks the start of his plan to imprison her and siphon away a power foretold by prophecy.

Inside Boax's castle, Arete befriends a sympathetic villager named Ample. Ample explains the town’s water arrangement with Boax and reveals her own secret plan to dig a well and gain independence. Arete’s spirits begin to lift as she learns there are people fighting back against control and magic’s abuses.

Encouraged by Ample, Arete crafts a story and finds the strength to break Boax’s enchantment on her. She regains her vitality and refuses to be a pawn any longer. Boax, still convinced she is enchanted, releases her but believes her submission will serve his purpose.

Boax releases Arete, under the illusion that she is still bound to his magic, and sends her on a quest to fetch a ruby from a golden eagle in the northern mountains. The mission is framed as a test of her renewed independence, masking Boax’s true intent to control her further. Arete accepts the challenge, stepping into a world beyond Boax’s walls.

Returning secretly to Boax's castle, Arete uncovers the true source of the water Boax provides to the town. She realizes his magic is not as mighty as it seems and that the town’s lifeblood is tied to a fragile, borrowed power. Her discovery sets the stage for a dramatic confrontation.

Boax, confronted by the truth, destroys his own castle in a fit of despair and releases water across the land. In the chaos, the gem that grants him eternal life is lost, confirming the long-awaited prophecy. The sorcerer’s grip on power collapses as his life begins to slip away.

With the town’s health restored, Arete is free to leave and chart her own path. She first travels toward the mountains to see the golden eagle who sparked a change in her. The world outside opens up as she steps toward a life of work and purpose beyond royalty.
