Fidencio, a Northern Mexican apothecary, uncovers the property deeds to an old silver mine called La Veladora in Arizona. He decides to travel north to stake his claim before others can. This discovery triggers the quest that takes him away from his homeland.

While traveling, Fidencio is captured by a band of Apaches and is about to be burned. The High Chief Caballo Recostado stops the ceremony because of a toothache. Fidencio heals the Chief by pulling a painful tooth, earning his lifelong friendship and learning how to make smoke signals.

After saying goodbye to the Apaches, Fidencio continues toward the Sánchez ranch. He reaches Hot Dog Springs and stays at Pat O'Connor's saloon, a town tyrant who rules through fear and a gunman network. His proximity to O'Connor's girlfriend leads him to learn about an imminent attack on the Sánchez ranch.

Fidencio is warned about the attack on the Sánchez ranch, prompting him to warn the Sánchez family and the town sheriff. The Sánchez, led by Don Serapio, arm themselves and prepare defenses, while Fidencio proposes an unconventional plan: a powerful laxative disguised as a friendly toast to undermine the gang. The idea is to create chaos among the attackers without a direct confrontation.

The following day, Fidencio, Pedro, and Pablo confront most of O'Connor's gang and win the skirmish. The defense is nonlethal and cunning, with the laxative toast impacting several attackers. The victory strengthens the Sánchez resolve and cements Fidencio’s role as strategist.

Fidencio defeats O'Connor's fierce lead enforcer Frank in a duel, breaking the gang's momentum. The duel demonstrates Fidencio's unexpected fighting prowess and cleverness. The town breathes easier as the assault's immediate threat recedes.

O'Connor's girlfriend reveals Fidencio's connection to the Sánchez and his quest for La Veladora to O'Connor, sparking revenge. The revelation triggers the gang's intensified plan and raises the stakes for Fidencio and his allies. Fidencio and his allies must stay vigilant as the danger grows.

O'Connor rallies the gang and heads toward the dig site to attack. Fidencio and Lupita send smoke signals to call for Apache help. Caballo Recostado and his people arrive, ready to confront the intruders.

A clash ensues as the Apaches join the defense and overpower the gang. The attackers are defeated and arrested, restoring order to the area. Fidencio's alliance with the Apaches solidifies through this victory.

Fidencio reveals a piece of ore he found while digging that proves the mine's existence and its silver content. The find confirms that La Veladora is real and valuable. His discovery marks the turning point of his mission from pursuit to claim.

Overjoyed by the discovery, Fidencio starts planning his legal claim to La Veladora with the Sánchez, the Apaches, and the town supporting him. The mood around the dig site turns hopeful as the community gathers to prepare for a proper claim. The film ends with a celebration that unites the town, Apaches, and Fidencio at the saloon.
