Fidencio Barrenillo, Cantinflas, is an apothecary from a northern Mexican border town in Sonora who stumbles upon the property deeds to an old silver mine in Arizona called La Veladora, believed lost after a catastrophic collapse. Motivated by a chance to reclaim his family’s heritage, he decides to push north to claim the mine, hoping to restore a sliver of past fortune to his name. La Veladora becomes more than a map or rumor; it represents a legacy that spans generations and borders.
On the journey, Fidencio is captured by a band of Apaches and nearly faces a fatal fate, but High Chief Caballo Recostado, Manuel Vergara, halts the burning ritual due to a toothache. Fidencio offers to help, and when he extracts the Chief’s troublesome tooth, a lasting kinship forms between them. In gratitude, the Chief teaches Fidencio the meaningful art of smoke signals, a skill that will prove crucial later in the story as a bridge between cultures and a beacon of communication.
Continuing toward his relatives’ ranch, Fidencio arrives in the dusty town of Hot Dog Springs and checks into the saloon run by Pat O’Connor, Ivan J. Rado (credited as Jorge Rado). O’Connor’s grip on the town is backed by a brutal gang, and through the adjacent room he learns of a planned assault on the Sánchez ranch. With this warning, Fidencio seeks help from the town sheriff, John Kelly, and the two set out to deliver a warning that could alter the fate of Fidencio’s family.
At the Sánchez ranch, Fidencio reconnects with his extended family: Don Serapio Sanchez, Manuel Alvarado, and his sons Pedro, Gregorio Casal, Pablo, Alfonso Mejía, and Lupita, Isela Vega. The relatives rally to defend the property with weapons, but Fidencio proposes a clever, non-lethal counterstrike: during a celebratory toast, he administers a powerful laxative to the opposing gang. This ruse disrupts the attackers’ plans and buys precious time for defense preparations. The townsfolk respond with resolve, and a spirited confrontation ensues as Fidencio, Pedro, and Pablo clash with the invaders, emerging victorious.
In the heat of the skirmish, Fidencio defeats Frank, the gang’s fierce lead enforcer, played by Carlos Cardán. The battle tests loyalty and nerve, but Fidencio’s ingenuity and courage carry the day, shielding the Sánchez family from immediate ruin. Yet the danger isn’t finished. O’Connor’s girlfriend divulges Fidencio’s ties to La Veladora, and the enraged mastermind mobilizes his gang for a final, deadly strike to finish the dig and seize the mine.
As the attackers press forward, Fidencio and Lupita send urgent smoke signals for help. The call is answered by Caballo Recostado and his Apache warriors, who swoop in to turn the tide, rounding up the remaining gunmen. In the aftermath, Fidencio reveals a fragment of ore unearthed during the digging—and the piece is revealed to be silver, confirming that La Veladora truly exists and lies within reach.
With the mine finally proven, Fidencio envisions a future where the Sánchez family, the Apaches, and the wider town share in its bounty. The closing scene gathers everyone to celebrate at the Hot Dog Springs saloon, a communal triumph that unites rival factions through resilience and a renewed sense of possibility. Fidencio’s plan to claim La Veladora becomes not just a personal victory, but a collective testament to cooperation across cultures, and the mine’s legend begins a new chapter in the town’s history.
