City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold

As the curtains rise on a fresh chapter in Mitch Robbins’ life, portrayed by Billy Crystal, he embarks on a journey filled with excitement and renewal, leaving behind the hectic city life for a more tranquil existence. Now managing a radio station, he finds solace among colleagues who share similar values, including his loyal friend Phil Berquist, played by Daniel Stern. However, despite this newfound peace, Mitch is troubled by recurring nightmares featuring the specter of Curly, the trail boss whose life was cut short in their previous adventure. It seems that his past continues to haunt him, as Mitch struggles to shake the feeling that Curly’s spirit might still be watching over him.

As Mitch approaches the milestone of turning 40, he begins to confront deep-seated fears that have lingered for years. The return of Phil, now single and carefree, acts as a poignant reminder of life’s unpredictability. Complicating matters further is Mitch’s younger brother, Glen, whose chaotic presence tests Mitch’s patience and forces him to reflect on his own growth.

During this period of self-discovery, Mitch unearths a mysterious treasure map tucked inside Curly’s cherished cowboy hat. This map, belonging to an enigmatic character named Lincoln Washburn, alludes to a long-buried heist involving a staggering million dollars in gold bullion. As Mitch becomes increasingly obsessed with unraveling the secrets of this forgotten treasure, he persuades Phil and Glen to accompany him on a thrilling expedition to Las Vegas, where they will decipher the map’s intricate clues in pursuit of a treasure now valued at an astonishing twenty million. But will this quest for wealth lead to self-discovery, redemption, or perhaps something far more priceless?

The trio faces a series of comedic misadventures, including Glen accidentally setting their map ablaze with a magnifying glass, Mitch’s close call while retrieving it from the edge of a steep cliff, and Phil mistaking a cactus for a rattlesnake. Their troubles escalate further when the two cowboys who supplied them with gear demand the map after Phil’s reckless boasting about their potential fortune. Just as despair starts to take root, Duke, Curly’s identical twin brother, intervenes, demonstrating his physical prowess by fending off their assailants.

It soon becomes evident that Duke is no stranger to the group, as he divulges the story of his family’s quest for the elusive gold. Their father had always planned to embark on this journey with his sons but was unable to do so due to unfortunate circumstances. On her deathbed, their mother entrusted Curly with the map, which he had hoped to use to reunite with Duke for the adventure they always dreamed of pursuing. Although Duke initially intended to claim the treasure for himself upon discovering Mitch had possession of his brother’s belongings, Mitch’s heartfelt wisdom ultimately convinces him that Curly would not have condoned such selfish behavior.

However, their camaraderie is soon tested when a hasty decision by Mitch unleashes a catastrophic stampede, resulting in the loss of their map and most of their supplies. Despite this setback, Glen’s impressive recall aids their progress, guiding them to the cave where the coveted gold is hidden. When they finally find the treasure, an unexpected turn of events awaits them: they are confronted by two armed cowboys intent on claiming the gold. In the ensuing chaos, Glen is hit by a bullet, only for Duke to reveal that the bullets are merely blanks filled with red paint.

Caught off guard by this revelation, Mitch and Phil are further shocked when Clay Stone, their former cattle drive leader, appears with familiar faces, including Ira and Barry Shalowitz. Clay explains that the two cowboys are his sons, and he has been seeking Duke for some time. He shares that he no longer leads cattle drives but instead guides individuals on quests for the elusive gold – which ultimately turns out to be nothing more than lead bars mask-painted as gold. As the reality of their wild chase sinks in, Duke holds firmly to the belief that true treasure exists beyond mere wealth and chooses to stay behind as Mitch, Phil, and Glen head back to Las Vegas.

As Mitch opens the door to his hotel room, Duke steps in, his demeanor revealing a mix of regret and determination. The burden of his confession weighs heavily in the air as he admits his original intentions were to deceive Mitch and their companions in their treasure hunt. However, a moment of clarity steered Duke toward embracing honesty as his guiding principle – a transformation that ultimately thwarted his plans to betray them.

Mitch’s skepticism remains palpable as Duke recounts his story of redemption, yet doubts begin to fade when Duke produces the missing corner of the map, leading to a specific location that marks where Abraham Lincoln reburied the treasure in 1909. This revelation takes Mitch by surprise, igniting a flicker of hope.

In a burst of excitement, Duke attempts to scrape the gold with a knife, his eyes sparkling with joy as he verifies its authenticity.
