Peter-No-Tail

On a Swedish country farm, a cat gives birth to a litter and one kitten is tail-less. The cruel farm owner orders the removal of the tail-less kitten, and the kindly farmer hides him instead. The sequence sets up Peter's precarious start in life.

The cruel owner orders the kitten's removal, and the farmer secretly smuggles him into a family’s car bound for Uppsala after their summer holiday near the farm. The journey hides Peter during the long drive back.

Upon arrival at the family's home, the stowaway is discovered by the children Olle and Birgitta, who name him Peter-No-Tail. The kitten becomes a new member of the household in Uppsala.

In the following spring, Birgitta takes Peter for a walk and he is chased by a vicious bulldog. He escapes into a town alley where Elaka Måns, the long-tailed bully, and his twins Bill and Bull hold sway. This introduces the rival cat and the threat Peter will face.

Måns tricks Peter into singing outside the home of Maja Gräddnos, hoping to embarrass him. Maja's human owners hate cat howling, but Maja is attracted to Peter and invites him in to share some fish. Måns ends up soaked with a garden hose when he tries to imitate Peter.

At the town cats' spring ball, Måns organises a competition where contestants must show the winning number with their tails. Peter, lacking a tail, is mocked and given an impossibly hard sum to solve. A snake Peter befriended earlier reveals the correct answer and bites Måns' tail, humiliating him.

In revenge, Måns breaks into Peter's home and frames him for eating Olle's birthday cake, so the family locks Peter in the ironing room as punishment. The injustice heightens tension and foreshadows later dangers.

That night, a fire breaks out in the house. Peter wakes the sleeping family with frantic meowing and helps alert them to the danger. Birgitta awards him a medal for bravery.

Måns dismisses his medal and launches a new sport, the Cat Championship, with a gold medallion as the prize. The challenges include a dangerous distance jump, a heavy shotput, and a hurdle race rigged to favor Måns. Peter is forced to contend with these unfair obstacles.

When Måns' tricks are uncovered, the referee disqualifies him and awards Peter the gold medal instead. Maja cheers Peter's victory and the two share a celebration.

Motivated by the defeat, Måns tries to rally the town cats against 'country' cats and releases a dangerous bulldog to chase Peter out of the city. Most cats watch from safety in the trees, unsure how to help.

Fridolf, a kitten, has strayed onto some high scaffolding and is attacked by the bulldog. Peter rescues Fridolf from the collapsing scaffolding and the bulldog is driven away by Måns and his allies. The town cats praise Peter and finally accept him into their community.

At the film's end, Peter's family takes him on their next summer holiday, returning to the farm where Peter was born. The tail-less cat has found a home among the town's cats and his adventures come full circle.
