Period of Adjustment

The story begins on Christmas Eve in High Point, Tennessee. This festive backdrop sets the stage for a series of comedic and dramatic events that unfold throughout the night.

Dottie Bates confronts the reality of her marriage and decides to walk out on her husband, Ralph. Her decision is influenced by the realization that Ralph only proposed due to her father's influence and potential inheritance.

George Haverstick, a former Korean war buddy of Ralph, surprises his friend by showing up at his doorstep. George is dealing with his own issues stemming from the war, including performance anxiety, and this visit marks a pivotal moment in the night.

Along with George, he brings his new wife, referred to as Little Bit, who is a nurse in need of companionship. The circumstances of their elopement are mysterious, adding an element of intrigue to their relationship.

As George and Ralph drink together, they begin to share their problems. Ralph realizes that George could be the key to understanding how to nurture a relationship with his wife, while George discovers Ralph's need to stand up to his overbearing in-laws.

Ralph's in-laws show up unexpectedly to reclaim their daughter, Dottie, and her belongings. Their arrival escalates the tension, setting the stage for a conflict between them and Ralph.

The conflict culminates with all six main characters ending up in night court. The sergeant of police informs them that their issues are beyond legal resolution, highlighting the emotional complexities involved.

Post-court proceedings, the group returns to Ralph and Dottie's home. The atmosphere shifts as they confront the realities of their relationships and the choices they have made.

In a private moment, Ralph reveals to Dottie that he has always had feelings for her. This admission brings vulnerability and opens the door to potential reconciliation between them.

On the pull-out sofa in the living room, Little Bit shares her thoughts with George about married life. She emphasizes that couples have plenty of time to grow and polish their romantic routines, suggesting a more laid-back approach to love.
