Micah, a day trader, becomes romantically involved with Katie, a student who has been haunted by a ghost since childhood. Their relationship is characterized by playful banter as they consider themselves 'engaged to be engaged'.

During a visit, Dr. Fredrichs, a psychic, warns the couple that they are being tormented by a demon attracting negative energy. He advises them to seek further help from a demonologist, Dr. Abrams, but Micah is reluctant, causing tension with Katie.
