15-year-old Jack Parker seems to have it all: popularity at school, a comfortable home, and a near-certain scholarship that could land him a coveted role as a batboy for the Boston Red Sox. Yet Parker is a chronic liar, and his successes have always rested on a web of invented stories.

During a school speech, a boy named Mikey suddenly appears—an alias Parker once claimed to tutor in order to dodge chores. Mikey, who insists he is the very kid Parker said he helped, becomes a troubling mirror to Parker’s fabrications and their consequences.

As the day unfolds, one lie after another starts to come true. Two angry lumberjacks materialize, and Parker’s possessive, jealous girlfriend Lisa from Arizona sabotages his attempt to woo Jennifer. Parker’s attempt to charm Jennifer backfires as the deceit surrounding him spirals outward, pulling in people around him and raising the stakes of every decision he makes.

Parker grows increasingly jealous of Mikey and Jennifer’s growing friendship, and he humiliates himself in a misguided bid to keep them apart. To make sense of the strange events, Parker and his friend Ryan start tracking the pattern of his lies, chasing a purple hippo mascot from a children’s restaurant that seems oddly connected to the chaos.

The hippo explains that the only way to stop Parker’s lies from coming true is to tell the truth. But Parker hesitates, worried that the truth could derail the upcoming award ceremony and cost him the scholarship. The tension escalates as the lumberjacks return, joined by other unexpected threats (including two alien agents), forcing Parker and Ryan to improvise a way out. They escape with the help of Lisa, but only after Parker finally speaks the truth to someone he’s hurt.

In the midst of the upheaval, Parker discovers a painful revelation: his lie about being the adoptive son of two Asian parents led to upheaval at home, with his real parents seemingly displaced. This discovery adds a heavy layer to the consequences of his deceit, and Parker begins to understand how far his fabrications have stretched.

A pivotal moment comes when Parker has a conversation with a man practicing his baseball hits—who he later learns is his baseball hero, Danny Kostas. This encounter nudges him toward coming clean at the award ceremony, where he is disqualified and loses the scholarship. Yet even after his confession, the room seems filled with echoes of his past lies, as if the narrative can’t simply vanish.

In a quiet moment, Parker confronts the hippo again and learns the truth from a shocking source: the hippo is actually his sister, Hannah Parker. She reveals that the “lies” were acted out by other people using special effects, rehearsed for months to teach him a lesson about honesty. The siblings reconcile, but Parker faces discipline at home, where his parents—Diane Parker and Ed Parker—ground him and set him to cleaning the entire garage.

With the lesson sinking in, he seeks out Jennifer to apologize, promising that he will never lie again. The two head toward Fenway Park, their future momentarily hopeful, as Danny Kostas lends one last bit of support in the form of a ride in a limo, signaling a small but meaningful admission of growth.

The film closes on a note of cautious optimism: Parker’s path forward now rests on choosing truth over convenience, repairing trust with those around him, and learning to navigate the consequences of his words without losing sight of what truly matters.
