In 2011, Liza Drake, portrayed by Emily Blunt, is a single mother struggling to make ends meet while working as an exotic dancer in Florida. She is dedicated to raising her teenage daughter, Phoebe (Chloe Coleman), all while managing the complications that arise with Phoebe’s father, who resides in Savannah.

One evening, Liza encounters Pete Brenner (Chris Evans) at her workplace, where a casual and friendly conversation leads him to propose a lucrative job opportunity with an annual salary of $100,000. The very next day, Liza’s life takes another turn when she is summoned to Phoebe’s school due to her daughter’s suspension, a result of a fire incident involving her and some friends. Following this, Liza returns to live with Phoebe and her niece in her sister’s garage, but tensions over finances ultimately lead to her eviction, pushing Liza and Phoebe into a motel.

While residing at the motel, Liza meets Camille and Sydney. Soon after, her car is repossessed, prompting her to reconsider Pete’s job offer. Tracking him down at Zanna, a pharmaceutical startup, Liza is unaware of the company’s struggles to penetrate the market and secure crucial investors for an upcoming IPO. Despite the concerning statistics — Zanna’s cancer pain medication has a market penetration of less than 1% — Pete assures her that it takes only five minutes to take effect and is non-addictive unlike many of its competitors. Meanwhile, Eric Paley (Amit Shah), the CEO, sees a potential $1 billion valuation if they can increase market penetration to 22%.

Upon reviewing Liza’s unimpressive resume, Pete forges a more appealing version, claiming she has a degree in biochemistry. He introduces her to Dr. Jack Neel (Andy García), the company’s founder, and she is hired on the spot, despite a hiring freeze. Her task is to convince a notable physician to prescribe their key medication, Lonafen, within a five-day trial period — a daunting challenge as Dr. Lydell (Brian d’Arcy James) has prescribed over $9 million worth of competing pain medications in the last year alone.

As Liza exhausts her efforts to secure prescriptions, Phoebe’s health takes a serious turn when she suffers a seizure, leading to the diagnosis of CAVM. In a moment of desperation and feeling her chance slipping away, Liza returns to Dr. Lydell’s office to collect a Tupperware she accidentally left behind. To her surprise, she overhears a patient’s challenging experience with existing medications, which allows her to present a strong argument for prescribing Lonafen. Lydell agrees to not only prescribe the medication but also to publicize its benefits through a speaker program, though Zanna lacks the funds for this initiative.

Refusing to take no for an answer, Liza persuades Pete to finance the speaker program personally, promising him a 10% commission on sales. Initially met with poor turnout and setbacks, Liza manages to recalibrate the program’s focus, ultimately catching the attention of doctors like Lydell, who begins prescribing Lonafen in high volumes.

As Liza’s influence grows, she navigates office politics and faces allegations of fraud regarding her fake resume, which results in unexpected promotions for both her and Pete. They witness Zanna’s initial success leading to a 400% stock gain within three days post-IPO. However, the escalating profits trigger pressure from Neel to push their drug beyond approved guidelines, which raises ethical concerns, especially when Liza learns about Phoebe’s critical health condition requiring surgery.

With mounting scrutiny and events spiraling out of control, Liza finds herself entangled in the nefarious activities of Zanna, leading to her decision to testify about the company’s misleading practices and illegal actions, implicating key figures, including Neel. After a rollercoaster of legal battles and personal losses, Liza is sentenced to 16 months in prison but ultimately finds herself released early.

In the aftermath, she partners with her mother, Jackie (Catherine O’Hara), and some former colleagues to launch a cosmetics company, fulfilling a long-held dream. While Liza occasionally reflects on her tumultuous past at Zanna, she prioritizes her newfound purpose, leaving behind the shadows of her former life in the pharmaceutical industry.
