Pain Hustlers

At the end of Pain Hustlers, Liza realizes the true extent of the corrupt and ruthless nature of the pharmaceutical industry she has become involved in. After stealing documents that expose her employer’s unethical practices, she is caught by Pete Brenner but manages to bring evidence of his and Jack Neel’s involvement to the authorities. Although Pete takes the fall early on and is imprisoned, Neel remains free for a while until the dam breaks, and the authorities finally arrest him based on evidence from Liza’s mother’s emails. The legal proceedings reveal that Neel was deeply complicit in the illegal practices surrounding the opioid sales, leading to his sentence. Liza’s own punishment is to spend fifteen months in prison, reflecting her role in the crimes, but she ultimately finds some redemption. Upon her release, she starts anew with her mother, selling skincare products, and employs some of the former Zanna sales staff, including her mother’s team, to rebuild her life and make an honest living. The film ends with news footage confirming the downfall of the pharmaceutical giants involved in the opioid crisis, highlighting that justice was ultimately served for the victims of greed and corruption. Liza’s journey underscores a painful awakening to the industry’s dark realities and her own moral awakening, emphasizing that truth and accountability can finally prevail, even after personal sacrifice.
