Pachamama

The film takes place in a highland Andean village near Cusco, Peru, centered around a sacred Huaca with agricultural terraces surrounding it. The story expands to include Cusco itself and the surrounding mountain landscapes as the protagonist journeys to recover the stolen artifact.

The story is set in the pre-Columbian Inca era, before Spanish contact with South America. The world is filled with temples, chasquis (messengers), and rope bridges, with daily life revolving around agricultural cycles and ceremonial practices.

A Huaca is a sacred object or shrine in Inca culture that anchors the villagers' identity and agricultural life. In the film, the tax collector steals the Huaca, disrupting the community's ritual memory and threatening their way of life until Tepulpai embarks on a quest to recover it.

The film explores three central themes: Courage, as Tepulpai learns that bravery requires both resilience and collaboration; Tradition, showing how cultural heritage must be honored while adapting to danger; and Myth, where spiritual beings and reality blur to guide the protagonists toward renewal.

Tepulpai is a 10-year-old boy living in a remote Andean village who dreams of becoming a shaman. He is initially rejected by the village's Great One but proves his bravery and grows more reflective and responsible as he leads the quest to rescue the stolen Huaca.

Naïra is a courageous and practical girl who joins Tepulpai after he crosses a rope bridge. She challenges his impulsiveness, helps keep the quest focused on returning the Huaca, and serves as an essential partner in navigating both danger and moral decisions throughout their journey.

The film portrays tradition as dynamic rather than static, something that requires care and adaptation. The Huaca and Pachamama anchor the villagers' identity, but the story shows that honoring ancestors means protecting their heritage through collaboration and brave action, not just preserving objects.

Walumama is an elderly woman who embodies the village's memory and ritual life. Her fainting when the Huaca disappears underscores the fragility of tradition without its sacred center. The film blurs the line between myth and reality by introducing beings like the Great Observer and Great Condor who guide or test the children. The Great Inca represents authority and order in the Inca world. Initially skeptical of Tepulpai's claims, his disbelief becomes part of the conflict. The Percepteur is the Incan tax collector who arrives to seize the Huaca and crops, triggering the central crisis. His greed disrupts the villagers' peaceful life and sets Tepulpai and Naïra on their quest to recover the sacred artifact, framing the socio-political pressures pressing on the community.
