Major Themes – Over the Sky (2020)

Explore the central themes of Over the Sky (2020), from psychological, social, and emotional dimensions to philosophical messages. Understand what the film is really saying beneath the surface.

💖 Romance & Longing

Mio's struggle to confess her feelings for Arata drives the emotional core of the film. The arrival of World Border amplifies the stakes as time and memory become unstable due to her out-of-body experiences. The romance is tempered by jealousy, miscommunication, and the fear of losing the other person. Ultimately, Mio's resolve to tell Arata her love anchors the story and prompts her journey back.

🧠 Memory & Identity

Mio's memories are scattered across two realms; the World Border reshapes what she remembers and what she forgets. The Lost and Found Counter and the goddess Mori serve as gatekeepers of memory, highlighting how memory defines identity. The process of returning to the human realm forces Mio to confront what she desires most, and whose memory she carries. The theme suggests that memory is both a burden and a beacon guiding personal growth.

🎭 Reality vs Fantasy

The film juxtaposes the everyday school setting with a vivid, dreamlike World Border, challenging what is real. The boundary between the two worlds is porous, allowing actions in one realm to affect the other, and making fate feel negotiable. Gimon, Kiku-chan, and Mori act as guides that reveal inner truths rather than external plot solutions. In the end, the convergence of realms leads to a bittersweet reunion that tests the limits of love and memory.
