Gray shot Garry Holden after Holden confronted him about verbally abusing children who had wandered into Gray's yard. The confrontation escalated quickly, and Gray responded with lethal violence, shooting Holden dead in front of his daughters and another child.

Earlier in the day, Gray had already displayed volatile anger during a bank confrontation, revealing his unstable mental state.

Gray ambushed the utility bus when it stopped near Holden's burning house. He emerged and opened fire on the six people inside, including three children. The attack appeared to be a continuation of his random violence rather than any specific target or grievance.

Gray had already killed multiple people in the neighborhood and set Holden's house on fire, demonstrating escalating indiscriminate violence.

When Gray surprised Sgt Guthrie from behind and shot him dead, Harvey was armed with a rifle but hesitated at the critical moment, missing his opportunity to take a shot at Gray. This hesitation allowed Gray to continue his attack and escape further confrontation.

Harvey and Knox had arrived with Guthrie to包围 Gray's location, but the situation quickly turned fatal.

Thirteen people were killed in the Aramoana shooting on November 13, 1990. The victims included Garry Holden, two men in a nearby house, Chris Cole, James Dickson, and several others including children who were shot in the utility bus attack.

The postscript montage displays the names of all 13 victims, cementing the scale of the tragedy.

Chiquita Holden was wounded during the attack but managed to crawl out of the house to seek help for her sister Jasmine and Rewa. She reached Julie-Anne and together they drove toward the scene in a van. Chiquita survived and was shown recovering in the hospital in the postscript montage.

Chiquita and Jasmine, along with Rewa, had hidden inside the house as Gray searched for them.

After the shooting spree, Gray spent the night inside a crib in Eva Dickson's house while she remained inside, speaking with police by phone. Eva was unaware Gray was hiding in her home throughout the terrifying night while the town was sealed off and residents sheltered in fear.

Earlier, Gray had fired at Eva and Chris Cole outside her home, and subsequently entered a nearby house to kill its occupants.

Eva Dickson, an elderly widow who had recently undergone hip surgery, ventured out with her walking frame to investigate the commotion. When Gray opened fire, he wounded Chris Cole but narrowly missed Dickson. She crawled back inside to telephone police, then returned to tell Cole that help was coming.

Earlier, Eva's son James had left home searching for their dog, and his blood was later found on the returning dog.

Stacey Percy, a 3-year-old girl, was severely wounded but found alive inside the utility bus after Gray's attack. Detective Paul Knox and Constable Harvey carried her to paramedics. She survived and was shown recovering in the hospital in the postscript montage.

The utility bus had stopped near the burning house with six people including three children inside.

The next day, Armed Offenders Squad officers located Gray hiding in the crib and surrounded his house. After a brief exchange of gunfire, police fired tear gas into the building. Gray burst out screaming obscenities and firing from the hip. Officers returned fire, wounding him multiple times. He was restrained and died from his wounds.

Gray had spent the night hidden in Eva Dickson's crib while police sealed off the town.

After shooting Garry Holden, Gray entered the house and set it on fire while the children were still hiding inside. This forced Julie-Anne and Chiquita to discover the burning house when they drove toward the scene in an attempt to rescue the girls.

Gray had already shot Holden dead and was searching for the children who had witnessed the murder.
