Oscar and Lucinda

In a quaint Australian town, Lucinda Leplastrier experiences a life-altering moment when she comes into possession of a mesmerizing Prince Rupert’s Drop. This fragile yet beautiful piece of glass ignites a fierce, lifelong passion for the art of glassmaking within her. Following the tragic loss of her parents, Lucinda suddenly finds herself a wealthy heiress, as her guardians swiftly sell off the expansive farmland that was once the pride of her family. With her new wealth, she embarks on an ambitious journey, acquiring a glass factory, only to become ensnared in the thrilling yet risky world of high-stakes gambling, introduced to her by her accountant.

Paralleling Lucinda’s story is that of Oscar, a young man raised in the rigid confines of the Plymouth Brethren by his father. He begins to grapple with his faith after receiving what he believes is a divine sign, prompting him to transition to the Anglican Church. As Oscar immerses himself in his studies, he discovers the allure of betting, which leads to remarkable success. With his winnings, he not only funds his education but also generously supports those in need. His academic journey ultimately earns him a scholarship to New South Wales, where fate intertwines his path with Lucinda aboard a ship. When they engage in a game of cards, the mood shifts, as ominous clouds gather on the horizon.

Once they arrive in New South Wales, Oscar’s fortune collapses due to his inability to control his gambling addiction, resulting in the loss of his scholarship. With nowhere else to turn, he seeks refuge at Lucinda’s glass factory. During his time there, Lucinda inspires Oscar with a vision of a glass church, and he boldly wagers that he can construct it by Good Friday, persuading Lucinda to stake her own inheritance on the outcome.

As the stakes climb ever higher, Oscar’s journey toward creating the glass church is fraught with peril. Accompanied by the stern Mr. Jeffries, he travels overland, guided by an intense fear of water. This expedition takes a dark twist when Oscar witnesses Jeffries committing violent acts against Indigenous Australians, leading him to a tragic moment of self-defense as he is forced to protect his own life.

Upon successfully delivering the glass church, Oscar returns, but the emotional cost of his journey is haunting. He falls under the care of Miriam Chadwick, who exploits his frailty at a crucial juncture. As he navigates the burdens of his past, Oscar finds solace in prayer within the very sanctity of the glass church. However, exhaustion overtakes him as he succumbs to sleep, only to awaken to disaster when the barge, precariously supporting the church, capsizes.

In the aftermath, as Miriam bears Oscar’s child, Reverend Dennis Hasset swoops in to destroy the contract that could secure Lucinda her fortune, intent on thwarting her legacy. Tragically, shortly after the birth, Lucinda passes away, leaving her son in a world where he will be raised by Miriam, now tasked with the responsibility of caring for the child as her own.
