One True Love

Emma meets Jesse at a high school keg party with her best friend Sam. After the trio is taken in for the underage party, Emma and Jesse share their first kiss in the police station, sealing a dangerous spark between them.

They decide to leave their small-town life and explore the world. Jesse pursues photography while Emma writes about life, hoping to travel together.

After six years together, Jesse proposes. They marry in Maine by a lighthouse near his cabin, marking a new chapter with a quiet, scenic ceremony.

One year after the wedding, Jesse disappears in a helicopter crash while on an Alaska assignment. Emma begins a long, painful process of grieving as she tries to rebuild her life without him.

Emma moves back to Acton, Massachusetts, to mend her life after Jesse's presumed death. She takes a job at the family bookstore while her sister Marie guides her toward healing.

Four years later, Emma runs into her old best friend Sam and they reconnect, becoming inseparable. Emma is newly engaged, creating a complicated emotional tension as she awaits the truth about Jesse.

Jesse's return is heavily televised. His parents warn him he knows nothing about Emma's engagement to Sam. The couple shares a passionate on‑screen kiss, but Emma later tells him she is engaged.

Back home, Sam expresses insecurity after seeing Emma kiss Jesse on TV. Emma and Sam sleep together, and the next morning she discovers she is not wearing her engagement ring, prompting her to move out to figure out her feelings.

Marie takes Emma in and the sisters drive toward the Maine cabin for a weekend. On the road, Emma picks up Jesse by car and they see her family briefly as they head to the cabin.

At the cabin, Jesse and Emma discover new things about each other. Emma reveals tattoos and a settled life, showing a shift away from their nomadic past, and she expresses a desire to have kids.

Back on the road, Jesse's license had been revoked since his disappearance and is still visible in papers. They are pulled over for speeding. Jesse notices Emma has reverted to her maiden name and finds a letter addressed to him.

Climbing the nearby lighthouse, Jesse reads a letter from Emma explaining how her grieving process evolved—from denial to immersion in books to reconnecting with Sam. By the end, both realize they no longer fit as a couple.

Back in Acton, Emma seeks out Sam and they confront their lingering feelings. They admit they are drawn to each other again.

Two years later, a pregnant Emma receives a letter from Jesse saying he has moved on to California and started a new relationship. The discovery forces Emma to consider a future with Sam and the life they might build together.
