At the end of On Sacred Ground, Dan McKinney, the journalist caught between the interests of the oil company and the Native American protesters, experiences a profound change of heart. Initially, he is manipulated by his employer into writing a biased article in favor of the pipeline, convinced that it will benefit the economy and provide jobs. Through his interactions with the protesters, especially Mika and the Native community, Dan learns the harsh realities of the pipeline’s impact — including environmental destruction and disrespect for sacred lands. His discovery of the arrowhead, which proves the pipeline was built on Native American burial land, becomes a pivotal piece of evidence, highlighting the deeper injustice. When he is caught in the violence at the protest camp, he is struck by a rubber bullet while trying to protect Mika, an act that symbolizes his awakening and empathy. Recovering from his injury, Dan shifts from being an outside observer to a supporter of the Native cause. In the end, he provides proof of the sacred sites' desecration — the arrowhead — and leaves Dakota with a changed perspective. Although the pipeline's construction is temporarily halted due to legal and environmental reviews, the film ends on a note of ongoing resistance, showing that the protests and the fight for justice are not over, leaving the audience with the hope that Native land rights and environmental concerns may still prevail someday.
