The Bråten family, a household on the top floor of a tenement on Oslo’s outskirts, includes mother Hulda, silent father Bråten, and five children sharing one room and kitchen. Trouble erupts when a son takes part in a car theft and the police arrive. Sixteen Maiken (Vigdis Røising) leaves home, befriends peers and clashes with her father. A tragedy brings the family together.
