On Funen lies Uglegaarden, the parish’s biggest farm, owned by widowed Dora and her three stepsons—Karl, Viggo and Thomas. They spend time at the village inn, where Sara endures crude advances. After finding rich gravel on Mosegaarden, they plot to seize the mortgaged estate of Chr. Thorup, but their scheme collapses when Henrik arrives.
