Nokkethadhoorathu Kannum Nattu

Kunjoonjamma Thomas (played by Padmini) is a widow who spends her days alone in a small village. People often tease her because she comes off as grumpy and weighed down by grief—from the loss of her husband and her only child. The sound of children laughing and ringing her doorbell would quickly turn into a sour reminder of what she has lost, and she responds with a mix of irritation and withdrawal. Yet life begins to soften when a visitor arrives: her granddaughter, Girly (played by Nadhiya). Although Kunjoonjamma doesn’t warm to Girly at first, the two gradually build a fragile, tender bond. In a symbolic gesture of the new closeness, Kunjoonjamma removes the doorbell, telling Girly that its only purpose was for Girly’s return—now that she’s there, the bell isn’t needed.

Nearby, Sreekumar (played by [Mohanlal])—Kunjoonjamma’s neighbor—finds himself drawn to Girly. His feelings are mutual, adding a delicate layer of romance to a story already steeped in family ties and personal healing. The balance of affection and responsibility becomes even more tangled when Alexi (played by [Fazil]), a friend of Sreekumar, visits and quickly recognizes Girly as a girl reported missing from Delhi. He passes along the news to her father, setting off a conflict between the urge to stay and the pull to return to a life Girly may not be ready to leave.

Girly’s backstory explains much of her sudden presence in the village. She leaves Delhi not out of fear or despair but because she faces a looming brain tumor and a limited time to live. She longs to savor the remaining moments, to enjoy life without the looming shadow of a difficult operation. When her father arrives to take her back for urgent medical treatment, she refuses to go, expressing doubt about whether any operation could guarantee a cure. The rift between mother and daughter is a part of the larger family history: after the mother’s death, the grandmother had blamed Girly’s father, thinking he was responsible for the tragedy. This tension, however, gradually begins to mend as Girly’s decision to stay near her grandmother rekindles their bond.

As the story unfolds, the emotional complexity deepens. Sreekumar discovers a photograph of himself in Girly’s room while he’s packing her things for Delhi, a quiet indicator that his feelings may have been returned in kind. The film’s climax takes a poignant turn, with Kunjoonjamma’s actions signaling a final, fraught attempt to protect what she values most. In a desperate moment, she medicates the situation with sleeping pills in a soup, and Girly is placed under the care that will take her back to Delhi for treatment, though she remains unconscious for the journey.

The ending leaves viewers with an interpretation to weigh. An ambulance drifts into the night, its lights fading into the darkness as Sreekumar watches with a mix of sadness and quiet hope. When he finally turns away, he sees Kunjoonjamma at the doorway, once again fixing the doorbell with a steadfast belief that Girly might return one day. The scene lingers on the themes of memory, longing, and the enduring strength of family bonds, inviting audiences to reflect on what it means to hold on—and what it means to let go.
