Ravi Yadav, Vinod Khanna, is the loyal servant of Manohar Singh, quietly nurturing a dream that his younger brother Rohan Yadav will grow up to be a successful lawyer. To help make that future possible, Manohar’s wife Renuka, Moushumi Chatterjee, begins teaching Ravi English so he can land a good job in Mumbai and support Rohan’s schooling. But Manohar feels unsettled by Ravi’s influence and secretly schemes to jail him, setting off a chain of events that will test loyalty, memory, and family ties.
Ravi’s world crumbles when he is falsely accused of raping his lover Parvati, Sonu Walia. The real rapist murders Parvati and misleads the court into convicting Ravi, sentencing him to twelve years in prison. As Ravi fights to clear his name, Renuka remains a glimmer of potential help for Ravi and for Rohan’s future, even as Manohar’s grip on the family tightens.
Twelve years pass. Ravi is released, and his brother’s whereabouts become a mystery. Rohan Yadav has been adopted by a famous lawyer Gujral and his wife Yashoda, and he has grown up under the name Vasudev Gujral, a capable lawyer in his own right. Salman Khan brings to life this young man who catches the eye of Manohar’s daughter, Payal Singh, Karisma Kapoor. The film threads a new emotional arc as Vasudev falls for Payal, intertwining the fates of two families that have endured a bitter rift.
Meanwhile, Ravi discovers that Renuka is still alive, though her memory has been dimmed because of Manohar’s earlier attempt on her life. Renuka’s memories begin to return, and Manohar remains unaware of the truth she holds. In a bid to earn money to sustain the tangled family needs, Manohar accepts a contract to kill Vasudev Gujral, believing Vasu to be a rapist who harmed a woman and seeking revenge on the mother’s behalf. He is blind to the deeper bond that ties Vasudev to Ravi, a revelation that will upend everything.
When Manohar enters Vasudev’s room, a photograph reveals that Vasu is actually Rohan. He retreats, but Vasudev apprehends him and Ravi is arrested. At the police station, Renuka’s memory returns in full, and the truth about the past comes rushing to light. Payal is suddenly reunited with her mother, and she returns home to confront her father, Manohar. In a cruel twist, Manohar traps his own daughter, proving how far his insecurity will drive him. Ravi, now cornered by his own family’s machinations, is shot by Manohar. Renuka pleads with him to spare Ravi, but the dying man insists she not take revenge. As Ravi breathes his last, the film closes on a somber note that memory, loyalty, and love collide in a moral reckoning that leaves a family fractured but resolute.
