Zhao Min entices Zhang Wuji to the domain of her father, where the Six Major Sects are trapped in the Wanan Pagoda. She promises to release the sect leaders if he can persuade them to serve the Imperial Yuan government, providing a path to the Dragon Saber. Wuji refuses to coerce the masters, setting up the central conflict between him, Zhao Min, and the sects.

Abbess Miejue compels Zhou Zhiruo to swear she will not fall in love with Zhang Wuji. She then transfers the Emei Sect's leadership to Zhou Zhiruo and teaches her the secrets of the Heavenly Sword and the Dragon Saber. These actions elevate Zhou's status and set up the power struggle to come.

Fan Yao helps the sect leaders escape the burning Wanan Pagoda, but the building is consumed and the masters are trapped on higher floors. The leaders rely on Grand Diversion to land safely once freed. Abbess Miejue is fatally struck by a cold touch from a member of the Xuanming Duo and refuses Wuji's assistance.

Zhao Min's father blames her for failing to stop Zhang Wuji, so she agrees to travel with him to Ice Fire Island to study the Dragon Saber. The journey signals a shift in alliances as Zhao Min draws closer to Wuji's cause. They set course for Ice Fire Island.

Ding Minjun swears revenge on Zhang Wuji for the death of her master and pressures the cult into upheaval. Zhao Min drugs Zhou Zhiruo to force her to accompany Zhang Wuji, Zhao Min, and Xiaozhao to Ice Fire Island. The group prepares for the voyage as Zhou Zhiruo remains under the drug's influence.

On Ice Fire Island, Zhang Wuji is attacked by the Ming Guardians but fights them off. Zhao Min reads aloud rock-carved details about the Grand Diversion from the Guardians' weapons, revealing the technique to Wuji. Armed with the new skill, Wuji lands safely and repels the Ming Guardians.

Xiaozhao becomes leader of the Ming Cult after her mother, the Purple Dress Dragon King, is burned alive for losing her virginity. This brutal event seals Xiaozhao's distance from Zhang Wuji, making their future separation inevitable.

Zhao Min drugs the others again, steals the Dragon Saber, and sails off in the night with Zhou Zhiruo. Zhou Zhiruo pretends to sleep, then jumps off the boat to return to the island and tell Zhang Wuji what happened, hinting that they may end up together. Zhang Wuji and Zhou Zhiruo later return to Bright Peak without Xiaozhao.

Ding Minjun is attacked by Song Qingshu and dies. Zhou Zhiruo then kills Song Qingshu in retaliation. This chain of deaths intensifies the rivalries among the factions as the wedding approaches.

On the day of Zhang Wuji and Zhou Zhiruo's wedding, Zhao Min forbids the marriage and shows Wuji a strand of hair from his godfather Xie Xun to expose Zhou Zhiruo's plots. Zhou Zhiruo attacks Zhao Min, but Zhang Wuji steps in to protect her. Wuji ultimately leaves Bright Peak with Zhao Min, ending Zhou Zhiruo's hopes of the union.

Zhao Min explains Zhou Zhiruo used Song Qingshu as a scapegoat to rise to leadership of the Emei Sect and to steal the two swords in order to obtain the Nine Yin Manual. Her confession links the betrayals to the present power struggle and Wuji's quest for the Dragon Saber.

Zhou Zhiruo holds a public execution for Xie Xun and Zhang Wuji attends. She proclaims that only the one who defeats her may claim Xie Xun. Cheng Kun invades, kills some disciples to steal the two swords, and Wuji defeats him using the Ming Guardians' weapons and skills. Zhou Zhiruo is mortally wounded and dies, asking Wuji to promise never to fail Zhao Min.
