[Rebecca Shoichet] Sunset Shimmer and [Andrea Libman] Pinkie Pie head to the Starswirled Music Festival, a two-day live event, eager for a reunion by PostCrush, the group’s favorite pop duo, comprising vocalist/guitarist [Lili Beaudoin] Kiwi Lollipop (K-Lo) and drummer [Mariee Devereux] Supernova Zap (Su-Z).

On the first day, Sunset Shimmer copes with a string of small annoyances, many of them caused by an easily distracted Pinkie Pie. When Pinkie destroys a churro cart, the two are kicked out, and Sunset angrily rejects Pinkie’s attempted apology. As Sunset sits on a hilltop overlooking the festival site, a surge of magical energy washes over her, signaling that something extraordinary is beginning.

When Sunset wakes up the next morning, she discovers she is reliving the first day of the festival. She tries to keep Pinkie from getting sidetracked, but Pinkie again breaks the churro cart, and both of them end up expelled from the grounds once more. On the next repetition, Sunset decides to cut Pinkie out of the plan, snagging a front-row spot to see PostCrush, unaware that Pinkie’s heartbreak and the others’ disapproval are still brewing behind her choice.

Sunset is stunned to find that she remains stuck in the same day, looping time after time even after she seemingly achieves her goal, and she begins to blame Pinkie for the situation. After a couple of weeks in the loop, she attempts a drastic move by driving Rarity’s RV away in the middle of the night to break free, but the plan fails when the vehicle breaks down and traps her in the loop once more. The next day, she reaches out to Princess Twilight Sparkle in Equestria, and [Tara Strong] Twilight Sparkle replies that the loop is caused by a magical artifact known as the Time Twirler. Sunset resolves to locate the user of the artifact and put an end to the loop.

The group initially suspects that the Time Twirler is connected to a performance by the Sirens/Dazzlings, whose song seems to guide Sunset toward the artifact. However, [Kazumi Evans] Adagio Dazzle explains that they never regained their magic after losing it, and they have nothing to do with the time loop. With a renewed sense of purpose, Sunset chooses to treat Pinkie better and indulges her in a variety of activities during another cycle. The friends manage to sneak backstage to meet PostCrush and learn that the duo found the Time Twirler on the night before the festival, using its spell to reset the day whenever a mishap threatened their flawless set.

A security guard initially ejects them, but he later readsmit them, and just as PostCrush’s show begins, Pinkie knocks the Time Twirler off K-Lo’s hair bow while Sunset smashes it to the ground, breaking the spell for good. Kiwi Lollipop and Supernova Zap are left desperate at first, but Sunset reassures them that their fans want to see them perform and have fun, not chase perfection. The duo apologizes and reconciles, delivering a lively performance alongside Sunset and Pinkie.

The next morning, Sunset is delighted to learn that a new day has begun—the second day of the festival. She notes that she has been in the loop for three weeks and decides to spend the day with Pinkie, embracing the chance to enjoy the moment without repeating it again.

My Little Pony: Equestria Girls - Sunset’s Backstage Pass Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about My Little Pony: Equestria Girls - Sunset’s Backstage Pass (2019): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why is Sunset Shimmer stuck in a time loop?

Sunset Shimmer gets trapped in a time loop because PostCrush, the pop duo performing at the Starswirled Music Festival, used a magical artifact called the Time Twirler to reset the day whenever something went wrong with their performance. They wanted a perfect show, so every time a mishap occurred, they activated the device, trapping everyone in the same first day of the festival.

Foreshadowing: The magical energy that washes over Sunset on the hilltop after being kicked out signals the beginning of the loop.

  • time loop
  • time twirler
  • postcrush
  • sunset shimmer
  • starswirled festival
Q2

What is the Time Twirler?

The Time Twirler is a magical artifact that PostCrush found the night before the festival. It has the power to reset an entire day, causing everyone to relive the same 24 hours from the beginning. PostCrush used it to erase any mistakes or problems during their performance, attempting to achieve musical perfection.

  • time twirler
  • magic artifact
  • postcrush
  • time travel
Q3

Why did PostCrush create the time loop?

PostCrush created the time loop because they were terrified of giving a imperfect performance. They used the Time Twirler to reset the day whenever something went wrong, like equipment malfunctions or unexpected mishaps, desperate to deliver what they believed would be a flawless show for their fans.

  • time twirler

Q4

Why does Sunset blame Pinkie Pie for the time loop?

Sunset initially blames Pinkie Pie because in the early loop cycles, Pinkie's distractibility keeps causing problems, like destroying the churro cart, that result in them getting kicked out of the festival. Sunset wrongly assumes Pinkie's actions are what triggers the loop to reset, not realizing the Time Twirler is the actual cause.

Foreshadowing: The first two loop cycles both end with Pinkie destroying the churro cart, leading Sunset to falsely conclude her friend is responsible.

Q5

How does Sunset break the time loop?

Sunset breaks the time loop by physically destroying the Time Twirler. While PostCrush performs, Pinkie knocks the device off K-Lo's hair bow, and Sunset smashes it on the ground. This permanently breaks the spell and allows time to advance to the second day of the festival.

Foreshadowing: The Sirens' song guides Sunset toward the artifact, hinting at where to find it.

Q6

Why were the Sirens/Dazzlings suspected of causing the time loop?

The Sirens/Dazzlings were suspected because their song lyrics seemed to guide Sunset toward the Time Twirler, making it appear they were involved. However, Adagio Dazzle later reveals that they never regained their magic after losing it and have nothing to do with the time loop.

Foreshadowing: The Sirens' mysterious song plays as Sunset searches for answers, creating initial suspicion.

  • sirens
  • dazzlings
  • adagio

Q7

How long was Sunset stuck in the time loop?

Sunset was stuck in the time loop for three weeks, though she experienced each repetition as the same first day of the festival. During this time, she repeatedly tried different approaches to either enjoy the concert or escape the cycle before finally breaking free.

Foreshadowing: Sunset mentions that the failed RV escape attempt happens after what feels like two weeks of looping.

Q8

Why does Sunset decide to treat Pinkie better?

Sunset decides to treat Pinkie better after learning that the Time Twirler, not Pinkie, causes the loop. Realizing her friend is unfairly blamed, Sunset stops resenting Pinkie and instead focuses on enjoying the festival together, which helps rebuild their friendship.

Foreshadowing: After Twilight explains the Time Twirler, Sunset's attitude shifts from blame to acceptance.

Q9

Why does Sunset's RV escape plan fail?

Sunset's escape plan fails because simply leaving the festival grounds doesn't break the magical loop, the Time Twirler's spell is tied to the festival itself and the performers, not the physical location. When Rarity's RV breaks down, Sunset remains trapped in the same day regardless of where she travels.

Foreshadowing: Even after driving away from the site, the magical energy that began on the hilltop continues to affect her.

Q10

What happens to PostCrush after the time loop breaks?

After the time loop breaks, PostCrush initially panics about performing without the Time Twirler's safety net. The duo apologizes, reconciles with Sunset and Pinkie, and delivers a lively, heartfelt performance.
