In a bustling setting, a nameless, young orphan begins work in the house of a wealthy man named Ramnath Shreeram Lagoo, whose cold temper is fueled by a painful memory: a tragedy involving another orphan who killed his wife. Despite this, Ramnath’s dutiful daughter Kaamna Rakhee Gulzar sees something hopeful in the boy, and the two form a quiet bond that hints at warmth beneath the hurt.
Soon afterward, the boy is taken in by a Muslim woman named Fatima Nirupa Roy, who works for Ramnath and renames him Sikandar, a name meaning “Conqueror.” She raises him as her own son, instilling in him a sense of resilience and care. But the peace is shattered when Sikandar is accused of trying to rob Ramnath’s house while delivering a birthday gift to Kaamna, and Ramnath casts him and Fatima out of his home.
A fresh blow follows when Fatima dies, leaving Sikandar to care for Fatima’s daughter Mehroo. Grief drives him toward a sage-like figure, a fakir named Darvesh Baba Kader Khan, who offers a philosophy that becomes a compass for Sikandar: to find happiness in sadness and to face life’s trials so he can conquer fate.
The story then leaps to Sikandar as an adult, played by a towering presence who has built a fortune by turning in smugglers and thieves to the police and collecting the rewards. He uses his wealth to secure a grand home for himself and Mehroo and to launch a thriving venture, yet his heart remains tethered to Kaamna. She and her father have fallen on hard times, and despite Sikandar’s generosity, they rebuff his attempts to rekindle their relationship. When he tries to speak to Kaamna, she demands that he never address her again, and the sting sends Sikandar spiraling into heavy drinking. He also starts visiting Zohra Begum’s brothel, where a troubled romance begins to bloom.
One night at a bar, Sikandar meets Vishal Anand Vinod Khanna, a down-on-his-luck lawyer. Their bond deepens after Vishal risks his own life to save Sikandar from a bomb attack, and Vishal, along with his mother, moves into Sikandar’s house, intertwining their fates even further. Meanwhile, a danger-driven love triangle forms: a criminal named Dilawar Amjad Khan adores Zohra and learns of her interest in Sikandar. He clashes with Sikandar, and is soundly beaten, vowing revenge.
Gradually Ramnath and Kaamna discover that Sikandar has been quietly paying their mounting bills, and warmth begins to return to old wounds. The two households grow closer, and Vishal starts collaborating with Ramnath on ventures. Sikandar, unable to confess his true feelings to Kaamna, has Vishal write a love letter on his behalf; Kaamna mistakes the authorship for Vishal himself. Unaware of the mix-up, Kaamna and Vishal begin dating, while Sikandar grapples with the pain of watching the love he cannot openly claim.
REALITY CHECK: Kaamna’s engagement to Vishal prompts a harsher truth. Sikandar’s love must wait, and he chooses to protect his friend’s happiness by concealing his own feelings. He even helps arrange the wedding between Kaamna and Vishal, insisting that his own sorrow take a back seat to a friend’s joy. But trouble is never far away.
Mehroo’s marriage teeters on the edge when the fiancé’s family learns of Sikandar’s habit of visiting Zohra and objects to the arrangement. Vishal, sensing the depth of Sikandar’s pain, visits Zohra and offers money to push her away from Sikandar. Zohra refuses the offer and, in a moment of resolve, declares she would rather die than let Sikandar come to her again. Her words are sealed when she commits suicide, swallowing poison hidden in a diamond ring and dies in Sikandar’s arms.
With Zohra’s death, Dilawar joins forces with J. D. Ranjeet Bedi, the erstwhile foe of Sikandar, to devise a plan to ruin Sikandar’s family. The wedding countdown for Kaamna and Vishal becomes a battlefield: Mehroo is kidnapped, but Vishal follows and rescues her; Kaamna is snatched by Dilawar, and Sikandar chases after to save her. In the climactic clash, both Sikandar and Dilawar suffer mortal wounds, and Sikandar learns, in a harrowing moment, that his love for Zohra was never real. The confession arrives just as Kaamna’s wedding to Vishal reaches the altar.
In the dying seconds, Sikandar utters his final truth, and the room fills with a poignant harmony as Vishal sings a line from the film’s theme, a reminder that life’s odds can turn against you, and death may be the only true companion. > Life is going to betray you someday… Death is your true love as it will take you along… The memories of Sikandar’s life flash before him, and he passes away in Vishal’s arms just as the wedding ceremony is completed. The film closes with the heart-wrenching image of a wedding that has become a funeral—two paths of happiness and sorrow converging in a single, unforgettable fate.
