Mouna Raagam

Divya, a free-spirited college student from Madras, is pressured by her conservative father to marry. She tests the groom by arriving home late, hoping he will have left, but Chandrakumar waits patiently. After her father's heart attack, her mother urges her to accept the proposal, and she reluctantly agrees to marry him.

Divya marries Chandrakumar and moves with him to his house in Delhi. She cannot fully accept him as her husband and hints at divorce as a wedding gift. Chandrakumar expresses his affection, leaving her conflicted about the future.

Divya explains her past with Manohar, whom she had arrested after witnessing him rob a politician's son to pay for a girl’s medical treatment. She later learns the politician's son had run over a girl, and Manohar's robbery was to cover medical costs. She bailed him out after learning the truth.

Manohar reconnects with Divya and falls in love with her. Although she initially rejects him, she gradually returns his feelings, rekindling their romance within the backdrop of her hesitant marriage.

Manohar becomes part of a revolutionary faction planning an illegal rally, while Divya disapproves and asks him not to attend. He agrees to stay away only if she agrees to marry him, complicating their bond further.

On their wedding day, Manohar is falsely accused of participating in the rally and is arrested. He escapes and races to the marriage registrar's office where Divya waits. A policeman accidentally shoots him, and he dies in front of Divya.

Chandrakumar tells Divya he doesn't care about her past but wants a future together. He offers divorce papers or the anklets he bought as a wedding gift; Divya chooses divorce.

They consult a lawyer who explains that Indian law requires a one-year waiting period before filing for divorce for newlywed couples. The couple must live together for a year despite their conflicting emotions.

Over the year, Divya sheds her mental baggage and starts appreciating her situation with Chandrakumar. He remains wary and pushes her away at times, yet slowly begins to fall in love, even as he denies his feelings.

Chandrakumar is attacked by laborers after suspending their union leader, and Divya rushes him to a hospital. After discharge, she cares for him and realizes she loves him, attempting to show it by wearing the anklets he bought.

Chandrakumar notices the anklets later and realizes Divya's love, but the couple remains distant as he books her trip back to Madras. An argument ensues before any reconciliation.

Divya goes to the railway station to catch a departure she hopes will give them space, but she declares she loves him and would wait. She tears up the divorce papers when he hands them, and he runs to stop the train, carrying her home.
