Every key event of Motherhood (2022) in order, scene by scene, with when and where it takes place. Use it to untangle flashbacks, time jumps and parallel storylines, to refresh your memory before the sequel or to find the exact scene you are thinking of.

  1. Sayaka Takes Her Own Life

On what seems like an ordinary fine day, Sayaka, a female high school student, decides to end her life and commits suicide. Her sudden death shocks everyone around her, coming without any warning signs that those in her social circles could point to.

  2. A Death Shrouded in Mystery

No suicide note is found and the clues to understand Sayaka's death are untraceable. Without any explanation of what could have prompted such an extreme act, her death remains completely unanswered.

  3. The Case Is Labelled Shoddy and Mysterious

The lack of clarity surrounding Sayaka's thought process culminates in the incident being labelled as a shoddy, mysterious matter. Nobody is able to piece together why a seemingly happy young girl would choose to end her life.

  4. Acquaintances Describe a Normal Life

Many people who knew Sayaka through her social circles insist that she led a routine, normal life with her family. To the outside world, nothing about her home situation appeared to be wrong.

  5. Rumiko Appears as a Devoted Mother

Sayaka's mother, Rumiko, seems like a genuine single mother who took care of her daughter with love and affection. On the surface, mother and daughter appeared to share a warm and close bond.

  6. Flashbacks Reveal the Bigger Picture

Flashbacks of Sayaka and Rumiko's life trajectories trigger a critical turning point in understanding the truth. They expose how a traditional Japanese family, with its heavy emphasis on power dynamics, forced women to act accordingly even when the odds were not in their favor.

    When
    Before Sayaka's death
  7. The Grandmother's Abuse of Rumiko

It is revealed that Rumiko's mother-in-law, Sayaka's grandmother, had the habit of torturing and bashing Rumiko. As the head of the house, she treated Rumiko unfairly to showcase her influence and authority.

  8. Sayaka Defends Her Mother

Unable to watch the mistreatment continue, Sayaka attempts to defend and support her mother. Instead of being thanked for her courage, she finds herself on the receiving end every single time she stands up.

    When
    Before Sayaka's death
    Where
    Family home
  9. Rumiko Rebukes Her Own Daughter

Rather than supporting Sayaka, Rumiko criticizes her daughter for standing up against her mother-in-law. She advises Sayaka to show respect to elders without deviating from the basic family traditions.

    When
    Before Sayaka's death
    Where
    Family home
  10. Compliance Taught Instead of Self-Defense

Instead of teaching her daughter strategies to protect herself, Rumiko asks Sayaka to comply with cultural norms. She tells her to be patient rather than venting her frustration at the senior family members.

    When
    Before Sayaka's death
    Where
    Family home
  11. Rumiko Passes Down Her Own Upbringing

Rumiko wants her daughter to live a life just like her own. She shares the plethora of life advice she once received from her own mother about how to adjust and live peacefully with the family she would join after marriage, revealing that the cycle of submission spans generations.

    When
    Before Sayaka's death
  12. The Father Turns a Blind Eye

The situation is further aggravated when Sayaka realizes that even her own father fails to admit his mother's rude behavior. He consistently ignores the abuse happening within the household, refusing to confront it.

    When
    Before Sayaka's death
    Where
    Family home
  13. Sayaka Feels Betrayed by Her Parents

Sayaka comes to the conclusion that she has been left behind even by her own parents, experiencing a deep sense of betrayal. The very people who should have protected her instead sided with tradition and silence.

    When
    Before Sayaka's death
  14. Despair in a Toxic Environment

Complacency takes over as things spiral out of control within the family. Sayaka is consumed by grief and despair, losing all hope of reviving the bond within her family.

    When
    Shortly before her death
  15. The Toxic Environment Claims Sayaka

Having been brought up under the circumstances of a depressing, toxic household where power dynamics crushed any hope of change, these sequences of events sum up the suicidal death of Sayaka. The mystery of her untimely death is ultimately rooted in the very family that appeared so normal to outsiders.

More Movies Like Motherhood, by Mood & Story

Curated lists built around what makes Motherhood tick: the same mood, the same kind of story or the same emotional payoff. Each list explains why these movies belong together.

Movies like Motherhood: Domestic Abuse and Family Silence

Family hierarchies turn fear, silence, and inherited pain into a cycle. Explore movies like Motherhood that portray families where hierarchy, obedience, and silence conceal abuse. These similar drama stories expose the painful cycle of domestic control, cultural expectations, complicity, and inherited trauma, with emotionally heavy journeys that leave little room for escape.

  • oppressive
  • bleak
  • claustrophobic
  • family silence
  • inherited trauma
  • domestic abuse
  • Tone: bleak, oppressive, sorrowful
  • Pacing: variable, gradually revealing
Why these movies?

The story pattern: Characters are first expected to endure, obey, or preserve the family’s silence while adults minimize harm and distribute responsibility. As pressure accumulates, the story reveals how domestic control and patriarchal or cultural expectations persist across generations. The central journey becomes a painful reckoning with complicity, betrayal, and the possibility of breaking inherited trauma.

Why they belong together: These films share a bleak, enclosed mood built from domestic abuse, child abuse, emotional suppression, and unequal family power. Their emotional weight comes from exposing how silence and cultural expectations protect the abuser rather than the victim, making sustained cruelty and the failures of care impossible to dismiss.

Movies like Motherhood: Nonlinear Stories of Sudden Tragedy

An abrupt loss opens a painful backward search for causes everyone avoided. Find movies like Motherhood that open with suicide and gradually reconstruct the suffering behind it. These nonlinear dramas use flashbacks, withheld motives, and shifting pacing to reveal how sustained abuse, parental failure, and enforced obedience turn a shocking loss into a devastating portrait of trapped lives.

  • bleak
  • grief-stricken
  • foreboding
  • nonlinear
  • psychologically disturbing
  • tragic
  • Tone: bleak, grieving, foreboding
  • Pacing: variable, abrupt opening and slow flashbacks
Why these movies?

The story pattern: A sudden suicide or similarly irreversible rupture interrupts the surface of a family story. Flashbacks then trace missed warnings, sustained abuse, and failures of care, while uncertainty over the character’s motives delays a complete explanation. Each return to the past narrows the possible interpretations until the tragedy is recontextualized as the product of a destructive environment.

Why they belong together: The grouping is defined by a variable rhythm: an abrupt opening followed by slower domestic flashbacks and progressively darker context. These movies rely less on suspense alone than on grief and moral pressure, revealing suicide as the culmination of abuse and enforced obedience rather than an isolated choice.
