Moloch

In the ending of Moloch, it is revealed that the cursed folklore of Feike is a repeating cycle of vengeance and sacrifice driven by an ancient pact with a pagan god named Moloch. Centuries ago, Feike, a young woman accused of witchcraft, entered into an agreement with Moloch to exact justice on those who wronged her — specifically Helen, the wife of an adulterous lord. Feike agreed to sacrifice herself and her unborn child, her own life for the sake of vengeance, which set in motion a curse that would haunt her descendants for generations. Every 30 years, a woman from the cursed lineage, such as Betriek’s mother Elske, is possessed by Feike’s spirit and compelled to sacrifice her own daughter to Moloch, perpetuating the cycle of death and retribution.

As Betriek begins to understand this dark history, she recognizes that the recent discovery of the preserved bodies of women with slit throats is connected to this curse. These women are all part of her family line and have been possessed by Feike, who acts as a vengeful spirit seeking justice through murder. The spirit of Feike, now residing in Betriek, pushes her towards the same ritual — to sacrifice her own daughter, Hanna, to appease Moloch and break the cycle. However, Betriek’s mother, Elske, manages to resist at the last moment, sacrificing herself instead, and freeing Betriek and Hanna.

Despite this act of defiance, it is implied that the curse persists beyond their sacrifice. Jonas, the archaeologist, who is drawn into the story, also begins to feel the influence of Feike’s spirit. By the film’s end, it becomes clear that Feike’s vengeful presence has taken root in Betriek, symbolized by her mental and physical deterioration, and her desire to continue the cycle. The final scenes depict this looming darkness—the possibility that the curse will continue through Betriek and her descendants as Moloch’s claim remains unfulfilled. The film ultimately explores themes of vengeance, the destructive power of holding onto bitterness, and the importance of forgiveness to break free from recurring cycles of pain, suggesting that until the cycle of revenge is truly broken, the spirit of Feike and the curse will never be truly ended.
