Maui, the demigod, seizes Te Fiti's heart, a small green gemstone, using his magical fish hook. This act of theft leads to the corruption of Te Fiti and the spreading of darkness across the island.

While escaping with a stolen heart, Maui faces Te Ka, a monstrous lava entity. Their fierce battle results in Maui's defeat, losing both the heart and his hook to the ocean depths.

Gramma Tala concludes her story with a strong warning that darkness still seeks Te Fiti's heart. Despite the fear it instills in the children, she assures them that one day a hero will emerge to restore balance.

In a moment of curiosity, Moana sneaks away to the water's edge, encountering a baby sea turtle in trouble. She bravely uses a large leaf to shield it from danger, demonstrating her early bond with the ocean.
