Mirugam

Ayyanar is a carefree strongman who uses muscle over brains. He becomes a terror in the village, pursuing women and clashing with neighbors. He makes a living by leasing out a bull for stud services.

He continues to exert control through violent acts and exploitation of women. He assaults people including his own mother and dominates those around him. His reputation spreads as someone to beware.

During a visit to the local brothel, he commits a serious act of exploitation against a sex worker and refuses to pay for her services. The incident highlights his disregard for others and their livelihoods.

In a separate incident near the neighbouring village, he wins bets by manipulating others and gets a drunk opponent into his control. He then engages in troubling behavior at home that affects the opponent's family.

Ayyanar marries Alagamma, a tomboyish girl, but continues his pattern of abusive behavior. On their first night, he torments her and she endures the abuse.

Alagamma learns of his troubled past and begins to reconsider her stance. She observes his influence and the cycles of his violence and control.

Alagamma decides to try to reform him through love, affection, and patience. She believes there is a possibility for change, despite his history of abuse.

Fate intervenes when Ayyanar is hauled in by the cops after a drunken fight. He is sentenced to a year in jail, cutting him off from his old life.

In jail he becomes addicted to drugs through shared syringes. He commits further violent acts in the prison environment as the power dynamics shift.

Upon release, he returns to his violent ways and is consumed by jealousy, believing his wife had an illicit relationship with her uncle. The suspicion drives him toward tragic decisions.

Shortly after, he contracts HIV/AIDS and the condition changes how the village views him. The stigma isolates him, though his wife remains by his side.

Despite abandonment by others, Alagamma remains loyal and supports him through the illness. Her devotion contrasts with the villagers' indifference.

Ayyanar ultimately dies of AIDS, marking the end of his violent arc. Alagamma survives but chooses to live with her uncle, signaling a bleak ending.
