Mirugam

In a village near Ramnad, Ayyanar Aadhi Pinisetty is a carefree villager who relies on his brawn rather than his brain, behaving almost like an animal. He terrorizes the community as a known womanizer, routinely engaging with sex workers and housewives alike. There seems to be no woman in the village who has not crossed paths with him. He earns his living by renting out his bull for its stud services.

During one visit to the local brothel, he rapes the queen sex worker Savithri but refuses to pay for her services. He continues to sleep with her, using her in his sexual games. One day, while playing cards on the outskirts of a neighboring village, the wife of another player confronts him. Ayyanar, smitten by her, wins all the bets, gets the player drunk, and leads them back to his home where he feeds the player’s kids stolen chicken curry before casually raping the wife.

One day, Ayyanar meets Alagamma Padmapriya Janakiraman, a tomboyish girl whose beauty catches his eye. He manages to marry her, but treats her like just another conquest. On their first night together, he rapes her and then continues his sexual exploits. She silently tolerates all that he does to her. Over time, she begins to understand him more deeply and starts to rethink her view of him after learning about his painful past—he is the son of a prostitute who was raped repeatedly in front of him, a memory that includes him seeing Alagamma’s own earlier life of sexual encounters with multiple men.

He later killed the manager of the ring and escaped to Ramnad, where he was adopted. Alagamma decides to try to reform him, hoping that love, tenderness, and devotion might steer him toward a better path. Fate takes a harsh turn when Ayyanar is hauled in by the police after a drunken brawl and sentenced to a year in jail. In prison, he falls into drug use, sharing syringes with other inmates, and commits acts of sexual violence, raping two men in front of fellow prisoners.

After his release, he returns to his old ways. He becomes obsessed with what he believes is an illicit relationship between his pregnant wife and her uncle, a belief that is later shown to be unfounded. Soon, he is diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. The villagers largely shun him, but his wife remains loyal and stands by him through the hardship. The film ends on a somber note with Ayyanar dying of AIDS while his wife chooses to live with her uncle, illustrating the lasting consequences of violence, trauma, and stigma on individuals and families.
