Miracle Mile

Harry Washello and Julie Peters meet at the La Brea Tar Pits and instantly fall in love. They spend the afternoon together, sharing smiles and stories, and they arrange to meet again at midnight.

A freak power outage halts their plans, delaying Harry's alarm and throwing their date into doubt. Julie cannot reach him and leaves for home, thinking the chance to reconnect is lost.

Harry wakes up and rushes to Julie's workplace, arriving at around 4:00 AM. He hopes to apologize in person for missing their date.

He phones Julie on a payphone and leaves an apology on her answering machine. The call is interrupted when a voice warns of an impending nuclear war within 70 minutes.

An unfamiliar voice answers the line and asks Harry to forget what he heard. The moment adds to his growing unease about the night's events.

In the diner, Landa verifies that the launch codes are real and senses imminent danger. She organizes private jets to a remote Antarctic compound and urges others to join her escape.

Most patrons and staff follow Landa's lead and depart in the owner's delivery van toward the airport. Harry, unwilling to leave Julie, leaps from the van and makes his way toward the airport to catch up with them.

Harry is helped and hindered by various strangers as he races through the city, and his frantic actions inadvertently cause several deaths. The experience leaves him shaken and more determined to reach Julie.

Meanwhile, Julie tries to find a pilot of her own, while Los Angeles descends into chaotic panic. The sense of danger grows even as there is still no official confirmation of an attack.

Harry searches for a way to pass Chip's warning to Chip's father from a phone booth, but the man hangs up before he can finish.

They reach the top of the Mutual Benefit Life Building and find the rooftop empty except for a drunken coworker. A missile streaks across the sky, confirming that the threat is real.

The helicopter finally returns to collect them, despite the pilot being wounded, and they lift off. Moments later, warheads hit and the EMP disables electronics, sending the chopper crashing into the La Brea Tar Pits.

Inside the sinking chopper, Harry consoles Julie as the tar fills the cabin. They face a grim end, with a final explosion suggesting a direct hit.
