4:44 Last Day on Earth

Set against the backdrop of New York City, this film delves into the profound relationship between two individuals, Cisco and Skye, as they face the impending doom of life on Earth. With scientists and theologians predicting that by 4:44 a.m. the following morning, devastating solar and cosmic radiation will obliterate the Earth’s ozone layer—and subsequently, all life—a sense of urgency permeates their final hours together.

Cisco, portrayed by Willem Dafoe, is a middle-aged actor who seeks solace in his connection with Skye, a passionate young artist played by Natasha Lyonne. Throughout the film, interspersed news clips feature various commentators and celebrities reflecting on the nature of the end of the world, providing an eerie backdrop to the couple’s intimacy.

As they confine themselves to their loft, the pair notices an unusual calmness enveloping the city, punctuated only by sporadic reports of looting, protests, and tragic suicides. In moments of desperation and intimacy, they engage in passionate love-making, yet Skye remains focused on her artistic expression, meticulously layering paint onto her large floor mural while always donning new attire for every added color.

The couple decides to indulge in Vietnamese cuisine, handing over $400 to their delivery boy, who takes a moment to connect with his family in Vietnam via their laptop. Following his departure, Cisco and Skye make emotional calls to their own families—Cisco reaching out to his ex-wife and estranged daughter, while Skye speaks to her mother.

In a turning point, a heated argument breaks out between them, revealing their vulnerabilities and fears. To clear his head, Cisco visits old friends Noah and Tina, who are lost in a haze of drugs and fleeting pleasures, leading to deep conversations about love and companionship. Ultimately, after reflecting on what matters most, he returns to Skye, and they embrace as they await the fateful hour.
