Read the complete plot breakdown of Mexicali Rose (1939), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Gene Autry Gene Autry is a singing cowboy who headlines a radio program sponsored by Alta Vista Oil Company, and his charm catches the attention of Anita Loredo Luana Walters the moment she bumps into him at the microphone. Anita, who helps run a Mexican orphanage with her uncle, Padre Dominic William Farnum, explains that the children’ s future hinges on real support from the oil promoters—money the orphanage has yet to receive. Gene soon learns the head of the company, Carruthers William Royle, isn’t interested in drilling or helping the kids; he’s ready to push risky land deals and sell worthless shares to line his pockets. The revelation sets a course for Gene to take action, quit his post, and head south to Mexico to uncover the truth.

On the road, Gene encounters Valdez Noah Beery, a bandit with a growing sense of justice who starts seeing himself as a modern Robin Hood under Gene’s influence. When Gene finally reaches the orphanage, he is reintroduced to Anita Loredo Luana Walters and meets her uncle, Padre Dominic William Farnum. The Padre reveals that he leased the land to Carruthers on a royalty basis, and the oil company has no real plans to drill—its schemes revolve around selling shares for a pipeline of profits that never materialize. Without royalties, the orphanage could collapse, and the children’s needs would go unanswered.

A fundraising dance at the mission becomes a turning point. Gene sings a romantic number to Anita, and Valdez, in his roguish yet noble role, urges people to dig a little deeper for the kids’ sake. Meanwhile, Carruthers’ men kidnap Alta Vista’s lead engineer Blythe, hoping to keep their fraud under wraps. Gene and Frog Millhouse Smiley Burnette chase the trail and manage to rescue Blythe, who confirms that there is indeed oil in the region, giving the plan a tangible target. With the truth in hand, Gene hatches a risky scheme: he and his friends will simulate the site most likely to yield oil upriver from the oil office, prompting Carruthers to drill to prove him wrong—and instead show the world there is real oil buried beneath the land.

As the stage is set, Carruthers discovers Gene’s ruse but decides to press on, hoping to manipulate the situation and buy back control of the stock if real oil is found. He and his followers try to sabotage the operation, pushing tension to a boiling point when two orphans vanish. Gene tracks the trail to a cabin where Carruthers and his men have holed up, and a tense confrontation ensues with Gene briefly captured. Valdez arrives just in time to turn the tables, and his courageous intervention frees the young ones and drives away the villains. The oil well finally comes in, proving that the land holds real promise, and Gene’s gamble pays off in a way that protects the orphanage and its future.

In the end, as the dust settles and the oil flows, the deeper moral of the story remains clear: true allies stand by you when help is most needed. Valdez’s sacrifice, framed by his final reflection on friendship, lingers as a defining moment of selflessness. > He was a true friend.
