What a Life follows Henry Aldrich, [Jackie Cooper], a well-meaning but accident-prone high school student, in a small-town setting that feels almost timeless in its charm. His days are a blend of trying to juggle classes, friends, and a growing crush on Barbara Pearson, [Betty Field], whose warmth and support become a steady beacon in a world that sometimes tilts a little too far toward chaos.
Trouble arrives when a string of disruptions—vandalism, skipping classes, and a disruptive clash during a science lesson—are pinned on Henry. The accusations threaten his reputation and strain his relationships with teachers, peers, and even his family. The school’s principal, J.C. Bradley, [Vaughan Glaser], leans hard on the evidence, leaving Henry to navigate a maze of suspicion that tests his character at every turn.
His home life mirrors the pressure at school. Mrs. Aldrich, played by Hedda Hopper, stands by Henry, but his father, Mr. Aldrich, struggles to reconcile his belief in his son with the mounting proof against him. The tension at home mirrors the tension in the hallways, making the stakes feel real and personal for everyone involved.
Determined to clear his name, Henry teams up with Barbara to uncover the truth. What follows is a patient, often humorous, investigation: Henry questions classmates, pieces together clues, and endures a few comic misadventures along the way—like a misunderstanding with a janitor and a tense moment with a strict teacher, Miss Wheeler, [Dorothy Stickney]. The school’s dance becomes a microcosm of the larger struggle as he tries to stay true to himself in the face of suspicion.
As the pieces fall into place, Henry discovers that two mischievous classmates have been using him as a scapegoat to mask their own misdeeds. In a climactic moment witnessed by the entire school, he confronts them and lays bare the truth, vindicating himself and proving the strength of his integrity.
The resolution brings a cathartic release: Henry is exonerated, the principal acknowledges his character, and his friends rally around him. The film closes on a note of growth and resilience, highlighting the enduring value of perseverance, honesty, and standing up for oneself, even when the odds seem stacked against you.
