John Felton, portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson, returns to his home in Orly County after time away. He is immediately confronted with a foreclosure notice on his front door, marking the beginning of his troubles.

While John grapples with the foreclosure issue, his wife Joanie and their children, Sam and John Jr., are busy preparing a surprise birthday celebration for him. The stark contrast of their joy against John's growing anxiety adds to the tension in the household.
