Adapted from Lermontov’s play, Sergei Gerasimov’s *Maskarad* (1941) opens with the beautiful Nina (Makarova) misplacing a bracelet at a masked ball. A stranger finds it and, without revealing its owner, gifts it to a fervent cavalry officer. The mix‑up unravels the polished veneer of Tsarist high society, exposing pride, marital mistrust, gambling, infidelity and humiliation that swirl around a decaying aristocratic class.
