After a masked carnival ball, Gerda Harrandt, wife of surgeon Carl Ludwig Harrandt, poses for artist Ferdinand von Heidenick, wearing a mask and a muff belonging to Anita Keller, von Heidenick’s lover and fiancée of Paul Harrandt. The portrait is published; when Paul asks about the model, von Heidenick invents a fictitious woman, Leopoldine Dur, who later proves real.
