Hunger grips war‑torn Siberia during the Russian Civil War, forcing peasants to scavenge corpses for food. While Sergei, a simple peasant, rummages through bodies, he meets a young woman searching for the distant town of Novokursk. She asks him to guide her and to tell anyone they meet that he is her husband, hoping the ruse will secure his help and keep them safe on the harsh journey.
