Mangal Pandey - The Rising

The year is 1857, and a large portion of the Indian subcontinent remains under the control of the British East India Company. In Barrackpore, West Bengal, on 7 April, Mangal Pandey [Aamir Khan] is being led to his execution by hanging for fomenting a mutiny against company rule. The hangman’s refusal to perform the sentence delays the execution, and Captain William Gordon [Toby Stephens] watches with a mix of relief and resolve as events unfold.

The story then moves back four years to the front lines of battle in the Emirate of Afghanistan, where Pandey’s courage saves Gordon’s life by pulling him to safety as Afghan snipers close in. This act of loyalty earns Pandey a lasting bond with Gordon, who later seeks him out at a camp and presents him with his pistol as a token of gratitude. Three years pass, and a tense incident at a New Year’s Eve ball in Calcutta nearly starts a rift between Pandey and Gordon. Pandey intervenes when Captain Hewson brutalizes an Indian servant who accidentally touches Emily Kent, the daughter of a powerful British businessman. Gordon witnesses the attack but does not intervene at first, yet later apologizes during a wrestling match, and a friendship forms that transcends rank, color, and caste.

The British army introduces a new weapon for its troops: the Enfield rifled musket. Rumors swirl among the sepoys that the cartridges are greased with either pig fat or beef tallow, meaning soldiers would have to bite into a cartridge and potentially violate Hindu and Muslim dietary laws. A low-caste labourer named Nainsukh teases Pandey for using such a gun, but Pandey dismisses the taunt. The sepoys voice their concerns to General Hearsey, who reassures them that no cartridge exists. Yet the debate intensifies when the troops are asked to test-fire the rifle; Gordon, after speaking with Hearsey, again insists that the cartridges aren’t real and asks Pandey to volunteer for the test. Pandey agrees, but the incident leaves his trust in Gordon unsettled.

Meanwhile, Gordon intervenes to stop a Sati ceremony and rescues a widow named Jwala [Ameesha Patel], arranging for her to receive care. The two grow closer, and their relationship deepens into affection. Pandey’s resolve hardens when he witnesses Hewson’s brutality toward Heera [Rani Mukerji], a tawaif who would later become a central figure in his life. Pandey saves Heera from Hewson’s assault, and their paths cross at the brothel run by Lol Bibi [Kirron Kher], where the two begin to fall in love. Their burgeoning relationship crosses the boundaries of caste and class, but Pandey’s faith in Gordon wavers when Nainsukh and others reveal that the cartridge grease is indeed pig fat and beef tallow. Pandey returns Gordon’s pistol, convinced that Gordon may have misled him, and their friendship begins to fray.

By February, the mutiny begins to stir as the 34th Regiment and the 19th Regiment at Berhampore refuse to use the new rifles. Gordon tries to avert rebellion, but the mutineers, driven by a growing sense of grievance and belief in a higher cause, rally around Tatya Tope’s circle and Azimullah’s counsel, with Bahadur Shah Zafar as their symbolic leader. Anson, the Commander-in-Chief, decides to deploy the Queen’s Regiment from Rangoon to suppress the revolt, with their arrival slated for 1 April. Heera warns Pandey of the plan after spending a night with Hewson, and the mutineers adjust their timetable to march on 30 March. A British employer—who is having an affair with Hewson—overhears conversations and becomes an unwitting catalyst for betrayal, ultimately leading to crucial information leaking to the authorities.

On 29 March, Pandey rallies the mutineers as the Rangoon Regiment closes in. When the British officers press them, war drums of resistance echo in the air. Pandey opens fire, taking life and wounding others, signaling a decisive turning point. He is subsequently court-martialed, and Gordon testifies in his defense, pleading for mercy and warning of bloody rebellion if Pandey is executed. Yet the court sentences Pandey to death. The night before his execution, Heera visits Pandey in his cell and asks him to place sindoor on her forehead, sealing their union in a traditional mark.

On 8 April, Pandey is hanged in front of Gordon, fellow sepoys, and the townspeople who have gathered to witness the moment. His death becomes a spark that inflames the city, and the gathered crowd erupts into revolt in a powerful display of collective defiance. The film closes with drawings of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and archival footage of the later Indian independence movement, underscoring that Pandey’s sacrifice and the ensuing uprising would echo through history.

In the end, the story weaves together courage, loyalty, love, and the heavy cost of resistance, painting a portrait of a pivotal moment when individual choices intersected with a broader struggle for national sovereignty.
