Roy Satterly is reading by flashlight when a Bengal tiger briefly appears in front of his bedroom window. The startling moment confirms the predator is in the area and targets the family.

In the morning, Rose finds Roy sleepwalking in the woods in front of their house, a sign that the tiger threat has unsettled him. The incident deepens the mother's concern and accelerates the town's fear.

A field cast from the next victim's scene points to a tiger as the hermit's killer, prompting Sheriff Barnes to hold a press conference to warn the town. The community begins to brace for a dangerous predator on the loose.

That night, the Bengal tiger revisits Roy's home, intensifying the threat and forcing the family to confront the possibility of an attack in their own living space.

A tabloid offers a $10,000 reward for the tiger, drawing hunters and reporters into the town and heightening the sense that the danger is now a spectacle. Sheriff Barnes bans hunting in the woods, trying to keep order.

While pursuing a sighting with Deputy Sharon Weinman, Barnes and his deputy spot Roy in the woods and give chase, only to discover a dead tabloid reporter. The incident broadens the investigation and shifts attention to a more dangerous hunt.

Six National Guardsmen arrive, led by Sergeant Winshiser, along with Colonel James Livingston-Graham, an experienced big-game hunter from England. Graham cautions that the guardsmen's arrogance may doom the hunt and resolves to take the lead when they tire.

The tiger silently kills one of the guardsmen, and Graham arrives to explain how the tiger killed them and to help locate the body. The hunt becomes more dangerous and urgent.

Deputy Weinman and Hundt find an empty National Guard truck on the road and call headquarters for help, but the tiger has already attacked. Roy encounters Graham in the woods, and Graham explains the harsh realities of hunting the tiger.

During a press conference, a reporter reveals that Graham was exiled from India after failing to kill a tiger that slaughtered over 200 people. The revelation colors how the sheriff views the hunter’s motivations and adds a layer of tragedy to the pursuit.

In the store where Rose works late, the tiger attacks as Roy and Graham arrive. The sheriff arrives and is forced to dive under a truck to shield Roy; the tiger enters the truck bed, but a gasoline tank explodes, killing the tiger. Graham survives and declares his hunting days over, while Barnes and Rose’s family adopt Roy.
