Madly in Love

Cristina, the princess of a fictional monarchical state named Saint Tulipe, travels to Rome with her father, Gustavo VI, who is intent on securing a loan from Italy’s national bank to ease his country’s financial crisis. Bored and rebellious, she slips away from the embassy and embarks on a spontaneous sightseeing tour of the city, curious to glimpse life beyond palace walls. On the bus, she meets driver Barnaba Cecchini, a cheerful and good-natured ATAC employee who instantly falls for her.

Barnaba becomes her guide through the Eternal City, showing her the ruins of the Roman Forum and other sights while gradually winning her interest with his warmth, humor, and unwavering optimism. The pair share a lighthearted, almost flirtatious chemistry as they wander from one corner of the city to another, turning a chance encounter into a budding romance. Their time together is playful and romantic, marked by a sense of freedom that Cristina has rarely tasted before.

After a night of companionship in his apartment, Cristina secretly leaves, locking Barnaba in the vast drawer of a clothes dresser to shield him from the world and then departs with her family’s bodyguards, concealing her identity. Barnaba’s search for her proves fruitless at first, but a television report about her Rome visit finally reveals her. When he realizes who she is, he confronts the reality of his feelings and, despite his modest background, takes a bold step: he asks for her hand from her father.

Gustavo’s initial refusal only hardens Barnaba’s resolve. He launches a series of daring efforts to prove his worth, including appearing at a royal banquet in his ATAC uniform and engaging in conversations about high politics with a number of international dignitaries. His audacity, charm, and genuine devotion begin to tilt the balance, and Cristina’s affection for him grows in tandem with his increasingly bold public demonstrations.

Yet the financial crisis looming over Saint Tulipe complicates everything. Gustavo contemplates a politically expedient match—Cristina’s engagement to an arms manufacturer—as a way to shore up his realm’s security and economy. This threat to their relationship intensifies Barnaba’s resolve to find a path that could keep them together. He refuses to concede the future to a cold political calculation and instead seeks to mobilize real support from the people themselves.

In response to the mounting pressure, Barnaba reaches out to the citizens of Rome, calling on them to contribute to the cause and help avert Cristina’s arranged engagement. The public’s generosity becomes a catalyst, and as Gustavo’s family prepares to depart Rome, the donors’ money flows in to erase the royal debts and dissolve the betrothal, effectively nullifying the threat to Cristina’s happiness. With the crisis alleviated and the political pressure easing, Barnaba earns Gustavo’s reluctant blessing to marry Cristina, sealing a romance born from sincerity, courage, and a shared belief in a future built together rather than imposed from above. Cristina and her beloved Barnaba thus step toward a hopeful future, their bond tested by circumstance but strengthened by the very generosity of the people they sought to inspire.
