Nicola Six discovers her extraordinary clairvoyant abilities, which allow her to foresee a tragic fate. She predicts that she will be murdered by an unidentified man shortly after her 30th birthday, leading her to seek out the identity of her potential killer.

Samson Young, a terminally ill American novelist, relocates to London in an effort to find a new lease on life. He exchanges homes with fellow writer Mark Asprey, setting the stage for their entwined fates.

After settling into his new surroundings, Samson meets Keith Talent, a brash taxi driver with a talent for darts. Their different personalities clash, but they soon form a bond over their shared experiences in a new city.

Keith introduces Samson to a local pub, the Black Cross, where they meet Guy Clinch. Guy is grappling with his own issues, including a troubled marriage, while also dealing with the chaos introduced by his son.
