In London at the dawn of the twentieth century, Phyllis Allenby, June Lockhart, is a young and beautiful woman who is soon to marry barrister and boyfriend Barry Lanfield, Don Porter. Phyllis lives at the Allenby Mansion with her aunt Martha Winthrop, Sara Haden, and her cousin Carol Winthrop, Jan Wiley, along with Hannah, the housekeeper, Eily Malyon. As the wedding date approaches, London is rocked by a brutal string of park murders, victims found with throats ripped out. The city’s detectives whisper about a werewolf, while Inspector Pierce, Dennis Hoey, suspects something more sinister tied to the mansion near the park, where the so-called Wolf-Woman is seen prowling at night.
Phyllis grows increasingly frightened and becomes convinced she might be the Wolf-Woman, clinging to the old Curse of the Allenbys. Aunt Martha tries to soothe her but, along with Carol, she keeps her own wary distance, hinting at hidden motives. Phyllis’s nerves fray further as she keeps Barry at arm’s length, even denying his visits, while a suspicious detective’s visit to the mansion ends with a murder that mirrors the park killings.
Barry Lanfield, determined to uncover the truth, delves into both the park murders and the mansion’s secrets, sensing that there is more than blind superstition at play. The investigation gradually narrows the focus toward the possibility of a human plot rather than a supernatural force, and it begins to implicate the people closest to Phyllis. The trail leads to Dwight Severn, Carol’s greengrocer boyfriend, as a figure connected to the larger scheme, Martin Kosleck becoming a key name in the emerging web of deceit.
The plot thickens until Hannah, the loyal housekeeper, overhears the deadly scheme and resolves to go to the police. Martha confronts Hannah in a tense chase through the mansion, but tragedy strikes when Martha trips and falls on her own knife, ending her murderous plans. With the danger momentarily dispersed, the door opens to reveal the arrival of Barry, Carol, and the arriving police, and Hannah steps forward to reveal the truth: Martha Winthrop is the mastermind behind the attacks and the infamous she-wolf.
In the aftermath, Barry finds solace in Phyllis’s arms, offering quiet reassurance that the danger is over. The pair share a heartfelt embrace, and the avenue of fear gives way to a cautious, hopeful peace as the investigation closes and the couple looks toward a future together.
