A kolkhoz machine‑operator, known locally for his inventive hobby, lives in constant tension with his wife over his projects. He creates a practical attachment for a grain‑harvesting combine, a breakthrough that earns a newspaper feature. Impressed, the kolkhoz chairman assigns him to procure equipment from a nearby city for a bridge construction, but the man is tricked by swindlers who cheat him out of the gear.
