Level Cross

A disheveled gatekeeper, Raghu, finds an unconscious woman in the desert and brings her to his remote dwelling by a level crossing. When she wakes, she explains she fell off a train and seems frightened by the isolation. She initially tries to leave, but collapses again and Raghu tends to her through the night.

The next morning, Chaithali asks Raghu not to contact railway authorities. She introduces herself as a psychiatrist and begins recounting her troubled past and her marriage to Zincho. She explains Zincho's abuse, his time in an asylum, and the killings he committed, including his first wife.

Raghu narrates a grim backstory of a mother’s wish, neglect, and isolation. He reveals that fate brought Chaithali to him and that her presence begins to ease his loneliness. Chaithali slowly begins to trust him, and a tentative happiness blooms between them.

While Chaithali cleans, she finds Raghu's identity card with another man's photo and clippings about the murder of a four-member family. Raghu returns and notices her frightened demeanor, and the card she inadvertently left behind. She grips a knife, he disarms her, and they confront the tension between their secrets.

Raghu opens up about his brutal past: an infertile marriage, discovering his wife in bed with another man, and his decision to kill them and their children. He fled and assumed the identity of another man who had sheltered him, the original Raghu. He has lived in secrecy ever since, haunted by his crimes. The confession deepens the bond but also unsettles Chaithali.

As they share their pasts, their isolation brings them closer and Chaithali decides to live with him. Raghu loosens his guard and begins to trust her. They start to build a fragile companionship amid the surrounding desert.

Raghu sends Chaithali to fetch water from an abandoned village, where locals tell of a creature that walked upside down and drove people away. Her absence creates tension and mystery in Raghu's house. The village legend adds dread to their growing dependence.

While Chaithali is away, Zincho appears, asking if Raghu has seen anyone in need of help. Raghu lies to protect Chaithali, and a confrontation ensues. Zincho reveals he is a psychiatrist and that Chaithali was his patient, warning Raghu that Shikha is a dangerous psychopath and that his life is at risk. The confrontation leaves Raghu wary and Chaithali torn.

Chaithali confronts Raghu about his past and claims Shikha was Zincho's first wife. Unable to sway him, she surrenders to Zincho. Raghu pleads for Zincho to let her stay, but Zincho is distracted long enough for Chaithali to strike him, causing him to collapse.

Raghu discovers a medical bill proving Zincho's profession as a psychiatrist and that Shikha was his patient. Before Raghu can react, Shikha strikes him with a shovel. The scene then reveals Raghu as George, prepared for another day as the gatekeeper, with Shikha presumably dead.

A final flashback reveals that George fabricated his backstory—he was never married and had actually killed the family of his ex-girlfriend. The truth casts doubt on everything Chaithali believed about Raghu and his past. The psychological horror of his deception lingers as the story hints at more hidden darkness.

In the closing scene, something watches George's house from an inverted perspective, accompanied by a low growl. The creature remains unseen but suggests a presence that looms over the village. The final shot implies that the threat endures beyond the narrative and observes from an eerie, mirrored vantage.
