Susan Morrow owns an upscale Los Angeles art gallery, and her life feels polished on the surface while quietly fraying at the edges. Her latest show features a provocative performance—obese majorettes dancing vigorously and naked—a striking piece that mirrors the tension simmering in her marriage. She receives a manuscript for a novel written by her estranged ex-husband, Edward Sheffield, a man whose romantic idealism once captivated her. The book is dedicated to her and titled Nocturnal Animals, Edward’s nickname for Susan, a title that hints at the ache and danger he sees within their shared past. The discovery unsettles Susan and drags her back toward memories of a marriage that she believed she had left behind, including her growing disquiet over her current life with Hutton Morrow, a successful but faithless businessman. As Susan reads, the novel’s narrative voice becomes a mirror that reflects not only Edward’s words but the emotional weather of her own choices, provoking a reexamination of love, ambition, and the price of a life built on appearances.

Tony Hastings is a family man who travels with his wife and daughter, but his journey is derailed by three local troublemakers—Ray Marcus, Lou, and Turk—during a road trip through West Texas. With Tony, Andes follows leads that lead to a harrowing discovery: the naked bodies of Laura and India lie near an abandoned shack, evidence of rape and murder. The weight of guilt crushes Tony as he confronts the brutal aftermath of the violence that shattered his family. A year passes, and Andes asks Tony to identify Lou, who has been captured after a botched robbery and is charged as an accomplice in the murders. The trail grows darker as Turk has been fatally shot in the same botched robbery, leaving Ray as the last remaining suspect to face justice. Andes proceeds with an arrest of Ray, but the case cannot rely on solid evidence, and Ray is released on circumstantial grounds. With retirement looming and his health failing, Andes chooses to bend the boundaries of the law to see justice served, and he coerces Tony into helping him abduct Ray and Lou. In a tense confrontation, Andes shoots Lou as she attempts to flee, but Ray manages to escape.

The pursuit culminates as Tony tracks Ray to the shack where the murders occurred. In a wrenching confrontation, Ray admits to raping and killing Tony’s wife and daughter, belittling him as weak. Tony responds with fatal force, shooting Ray, but he is blinded when Ray strikes him with a fire poker. Grasping for control, Tony stumbles outside, and in a final, devastating act, he shoots himself in the abdomen after a fall on his own weapon.
