Miriam and Hugh Halsworth are in the final stages of their divorce, which Miriam initiated due to Hugh's gambling habits. Their daughter Barbara lives with Miriam, along with her family, while Hugh stays at the Hotel Miramar working as head of publicity. Tensions are evident as the divorce nears completion.

Victor Macfarland, a wealthy financier and potential IMF candidate, stays at the Miramar during his visit home. Hugh is visibly uncomfortable with Victor's presence, recalling their rivalry from high school, and Miriam shows no interest initially, recalling Victor's abrupt departure 20 years earlier.

Hugh spends his final day before the divorce is finalized caring for his prized rose bushes. He claims to have quit gambling, and Miriam agrees to dine with him, but his mood shifts when his bookie calls to tell him he won a bet.

Miriam, frustrated with Hugh, invites Victor Macfarland to join her for dinner. They bond, sharing champagne and dancing inside the house until midnight, marking the official end of their marriage with a toast.

Victor and Miriam’s courtship resumes largely at the Miramar. Hugh tries to interfere by introducing Victor to Joyce Mannering, but Victor is indifferent. Victor later asks Miriam to travel with him, but she hesitates due to family commitments.

Upon returning home, Miriam shows her family her enormous engagement ring and announces her wedding plans set for three days later, signaling a new chapter in her life with Victor.

Before leaving for Washington D.C., Victor confesses to Barbara that he had gambling debts which caused him to lose her in a high-stakes gamble 20 years ago. He is on his way for a hearing regarding his IMF appointment.

Hugh, drunk and upset, goes to the family home to transplant his roses, enlisting Jerry’s help. They are caught by police, and Hugh is arrested, making headlines as Miriam is called to identify him at the station.

The incident becomes national news, creating awkwardness for Victor. He advises Miriam to stay out of public eye until his confirmation, and their relationship begins to strain as Miriam calls off their engagement.

When Hugh visits Miriam to retrieve his belongings, she confesses she cannot forgive his gambling, believing it proved he didn't love her. Hugh reveals he cheated in a game with dice, and they reconcile with a kiss, rolling the dice to symbolize their renewed connection.
