The university eagerly awaits the arrival of renowned athlete Bob Terry, whose presence is expected to boost morale. Frankie and Tad worry about telling their girlfriends and begin planning a substitute for the welcome party.

Tad learns that Bob Terry has been drafted into the army and will not be joining the crew or attending the party. The news threatens to disappoint the girls who have worked hard to prepare the celebrations, so Frankie and Tad decide to find a replacement.

The pair discovers Hercules Bevans, known as Herk, a truck driver, and convinces him to pose as Bob Terry. Herk agrees reluctantly after some convincing and prepares to play the star at the campus event.

Herk attends the party and enjoys flirting with Bess and Midge, using guttersnipe slang that baffles the other students. He decides to stay on campus and join the crew as Bob Terry, despite having no real boat experience.

Frankie cures Herk's nautical nausea with seasick pills, enabling him to ride the waves of social success. The substitution seems to be working as Herk adapts to the role and gains confidence.

The fraternity gang works frantically to keep the deception intact, coaching Herk to avoid uncultured speech and tutoring him in his homework so thoroughly that they risk flunking their own courses. They push themselves hard to maintain the ruse until the big race.

Bess breaks up with Tad and says she is going to marry Bob Terry, while Midge breaks up with Frankie for the same reason. The girls' engagements with a fake star leave the boys scrambling to protect their schemes.

On the day of the regatta, Bess and Midge learn that they are both engaged to Herk, complicating the deception. The revelation adds pressure to perform well and avoid exposure.

During the race, Frankie runs out of seasick pills and improvises by giving Herk moth balls, which energize him and help the crew win. The team surges ahead and crosses the finish line first, securing victory.

After the victory, Herk is arrested for bank robbery, a twist that abruptly ends the masquerade. The arrest throws the celebration into chaos and forces the truth to begin surfacing.

Frankie and Tad reunite with their girlfriends and explain that Bob Terry has been drafted, letting them breathe a sigh of relief and start repairing relationships. The truth about the fake star begins to come to light as families confront the ruse.

An announcer explains that Bob Terry will be spending the next few years in federal service, ending the deception for good. The film closes with the realization that the star’s absence has altered everyone's plans and futures.
